It’s not every day that San Antonio Shoemakers, a pre-eminent maker of handcrafted comfort shoes, gets a call from a young entrepreneur. But in early 2014, Nancy Richardson, the C.E.O. of the 40-year-old brand referred to as SAS, was contacted by Eree Kim, a 38-year-old designer who wanted, surprisingly, to collaborate. Kim proposed that she work with SAS to manufacture a line of comfortable — and stylish — footwear.

Thus began a partnership that has led to Hopp (which translates to “bounce” in Swedish), a brand of shoes and bags that Kim launched this week. “I have always been known as the comfort-shoe girl,” she says, laughing. For years, Kim would order pairs from several purveyors of orthopedic shoes — and always want to make one or two adjustments. This gave her the idea to create a shoe that was both easy to walk in and cool. So she designed a single style with a sleek shape and sourced the soles from Italy. SAS manufactured the shoe with its comfortable padded insoles, linings and arch supports.

The first collection features a lace-up style in black, white, ocean blue and light gray; to fill out her initial offering, Kim — a former denim and knitwear designer at Opening Ceremony — added perfectly circular tote bags in leather and suede, which she is producing in Queens, in the same color palette. “Whenever I’ve worn uncomfortable shoes, I’m just miserable for the whole day,” she says. “I just want shoes for women that exist that are comfortable. I don’t understand why there have to be shoes that have to look good but can’t be comfortable at the same time.”




Unfortunately, quite expensive.

Did anyone go through a Hush Puppies phase in the 90's? My H at the time and I had about 6 pairs between us. Now those were comfortable and, for a minute there, actually stylish.

If we're going the expensive old lady shoe route, I prefer Gentle Souls. I only have one pair of their boots, but they are so SOFT that I want more.

Ummm....those actually look pretty typical for SAS shoes. They aren't known for being stylish. 
If that designer thinks that's her only option for shoes that aren't uncomfortable, I have to ask where she's been shopping. She needs to get out of Payless, and maybe try a Macy's or Nordstrom.

I am just puzzled that someone set out to create stylish shoes and that is what they came up with. The orthopedic wedges that my grandmother wore might actually pass for cool now, but I don't think those ever will. lol

I like the color and the laces, but they could have been much cuter. They remind me of the orthopedic shoes a friend had to wear growing up to fit her ankle braces.

I have pretty screwy feet, and I'm really picky about what I put on them, especially if I'm going somewhere I'll be spending a lot of time on them, like Disneyland. Some of my shoes tend to be kind of old-lady looking, like my Clark's. But these shoes make me happy, because as old-ladyish as my Clark's might be, they'll never look as bad as these "designer" shoes!

I have a pair of black sas loafers and a pair of brown. I wear them with dress slacks to work and I LOVE them. They really are comfortable, I don't think they are ugly. I've had them about 4 years and they are still in fabulous shape and I probably wear them at least 4 days a week. Are they my only shoes? Nope, I love shoes. I probably have at least 80 pairs, they are my favorites.
