I need help figuring out what's "normal" my youngest is almost 2 and has lots of words but still not putting them together to make sentences. The only times she puts 2 words together is all done and thank you and night night. Otherwise one word at time. Is this normal? My oldest was very very verbal and speaking in long sentences and paragraphs at this age so it's hard not to compare. 2 totally different ends of the spectrum. She's smart in other ways like she knows almost all the letters the alphabet already ? Help give me perspective on where she should be.

That sounds normal to me. One of my friends has a three year old that still just says one word at a time. I think dana86 might have stuff to add based on her recent experiences.
If she has a ton of single words then she is doing pretty good. Around 2 is when lots of kids have a good verbal explosion we have learned so I would not worry at all. J is 2 1/2 and is in speech therapy for not talking at all really and then I have M who hasn't shut up since she learned to talk. So I understand the different ends and I know its hard but not comparing them is the best way to just go with the flow lol.
But back to the task at hand I would say she is doing great. You can start working on creating two word phrases for her to work on to get things and use your oldest to be the example. But honestly I wouldn't worry about it at this point it sounds like she is on the right track and then some if she knows her alphabet. So keep up the good work mom
non parent chiming in here but I have heard its also pretty common for firsts to be fairly verbal and seconds not to be because the oldest is speaking for them...
Ok thanks guys. Some stuff doesn't seem to click either so I'm trying not to be frustrated about it. She doesn't know basic farm animals but she knows all the Star Wars characters....ugh she knows what she's interested in and it's not the basics!

haha thats ok. She will pick it up. J knows her disney princesses but not farm animals. If you are ever really worried though just talk to her doc about it. They are there for settling fears and pointing you in the directions of who can help if it is something to worry about.

Thanks I plan to but was trying to wait til her 2 year check up which is only a month away now. Hopefully she's as reassuring as you guys
My X just started occasionally attempting phrases this week. He's 21 months and almost overnight his vocabulary expanded (things like "again" and "app"[le sauce] in addition to "more" and "milk"). It sounds like your youngest has a lot more words than him and maybe has been focusing on vocabulary over structure but it'll all come together really soon. I feel like speech is one of those things that happens so suddenly in a lot of kids that one day you're worried and then out of nowhere a verbal explosion comes and quells any concerns/fears.
