I have really managed to amuse myself here because I realize that so many of the books I read are depressing in some way or another, and I really wouldn't want to lead many of those characters' lives, so I've stumped myself at my own question!
Right now the best I've come up with is Moiraine from Wheel of Time. She's pretty darned badass, and can do magic to boot. Aviendha would also be pretty sweet but (spoiler warning)

This might sound juvenile but I think I'd pick Anna from Anna and the French Kiss. Dreamy book boyfriend, gets to live and learn in Paris, rich father...

Ohh... I'd also like to amuse the possibility of being a character in Harry Potter that all the shit doesn't happen to. Like, can I just be a random nerdy Ravenclaw and just spend my time in the common room while voldemort does what he does to Harry and the gang?

How about being a student from Beauxbatons? They didn't have to deal with so much Voldemess, and you get to live in France.
I choose Rosemary from one of my favorite childhood books, Carbonel. She gets to do magic and talk to her cat, and since it's a younger children's book, she doesn't have to deal with anything terribly awful or scary.

I always thought it would be great to be Anne Shirley because Gilbert is one of my book-crushes and the Kevin Sullivan production where he was played by Jonathan Crombie (I am still devastated by his death) didn't do anything but make me love the character more.
Mary Clancy from Life with Mother Superior (made into the movie The Trouble with Angels) was one of my favorite characters as well.
I would consider Lyra from the His Dark Materials series, but that is only because I would love to have my own Pantalaimon and get to hang out with Iorek.

In this scenario I'd be happy to just be myself, but with magical powers. The timeline works out actually, seeing as how I graduated HS in 1997, and the Battle of Hogwarts was in 1998. Although in that scenario I'd actually be in their same year as the gang, because I'm only about a month younger than Hermione.
Probably Claire from Outlander. What an exciting life! Maybe MacKayla from the Fever series because.... Jericho Barrons
I thought about Claire, too. I admire her courage and resourcefulness.
Claire here as well. I love her sass and her strong will. But I also have been fascinated by what it was like in different time periods before I was born.
