We're flying with ds tomorrow for the first time. My kid has no attention span for tv/movies, but I just remembered I have a kindle fire, and there are game apps, right? Anything specific that requires no skill that a kid his age might be entertained by for a bit?

Neither of mine were entertained by apps at that age for more than a minute or so. I had better luck with downloading kid shows. And snacks. A whole backpack full of snacks.

Monkey Preschool apps are great and easy to follow. You could also get any of the Dr Panda games or Duplo games - he'll be too young to play them but my DS2 (19mo) is entertained watching his brother play. Added benefit is that all of these are free.

Kindle Fire Apps are different from iPad apps, at least as far as I can tell. But they have a ton of fun games for kids. I think if you set up a separate profile for your kid, it will pull suggestions for age-appropriate content (at least it does on our Kindle Fire Kids edition). You can also search for books/videos/games by "character" (either actual character like Daniel Tiger or generic theme like trains or dinosaurs).
A has no attention span for games. He'll look at them for like 5 seconds. I have better luck if I playing a game, then he likes watching, lol. I think it's because he is used to watching his sisters play games.
I'd download shows anyways. Elmo, Caillou (I hate him but he loves him), Dora are all big winners with toddlers.
The other thing that works well is a surprise bag. I grab a bunch of toys/books/crayons from the dollar store and fill a bag with them and snacks. Then whenever your kid is screaming, you pull one thing out of the bag.
Baby First apps keep my 2 year old occupied. They have one called "Play Phone" that he loves. He also likes the ABC Learning Game, Puzzles Fun!, and Shapes and Sizes, He also loves an app called balloon pop.

Also? I have found that my 25-mo-old can't really navigate the Kindle Fire well by himself. He's been able to navigate the iPad since he was about 18 months old (please don't judge me).
