Do you think I need to bring a gift

Going to a kid's birthday tomorrow. Kid is turning 8. I am friends with the mom. 

Do I have to bring a gift? I wouldn't expect guest to bring bkb a gift. What do you think? Do I suck if I don't. I don't have time to get a present.

Personally I'd feel odd showing up without something. Can you grab a quick gift card (Amazon, Sports Authority, etc.) at the grocery store?

Yeah that's my back up plan. Secretly I am trying to get H to do it tonight on his way home from work

The grocery stores here have all kinds of toys and books. Gift cards are well liked by kids that age.

I'm way past on it but I'd say I'd bring a gift but it would be small/ like maybe $10-15
