I'm willing to drop a lot for mascara but do you think of the good ones out there (Benefit, Bare Minerals, Too Faced, etc.) there's really much difference?
What would you all recommend? I got a sample of Benefit Roller mascara and leaning towards that one. I've been loyal to Clinique for years but the last few I bought seemed to dry up quickly.

My thoughts on the prestige mascaras I've tried:
Tarte Lights Camera Lashes is the best, for me. Separates, lengthens, volumizes, doesn't flake. Not a super wet formula. And it doesn't transfer to my undereye.
Buxom Big & Bushy: gives a nice separated, wispy effect. But transfers instantly to my undereye. Can't use it.
Smashbox Full Exposure: gives nice length, doesn't clump, not too wet. But transfers throughout the day.
I'm also loving CoverGirl Super Sizer. It took some getting used to the wand (short, short bristles that don't go all the way around), but I really like it. Volumizing, blacker than black, and no transfer.

When we discussed this before, it was a very polarizing issue :-) Apparently all eyelashes are different, so people have very different likes and dislikes!!
I really like the deluxe sample sizes of mascara -- I'd prefer to only buy that size and never a full size one. They last the perfect amount of time before drying out, plus you can try a lot of different ones for cheaper.
I got last year's version, and I really enjoyed having it. Several different mascaras to try, plus you get a certificate to turn in for a full sized version of your favorite.
My favorites are --
Tarte Lights Camera Flashes (with Tarte Lights Camera Lashes a close second)
Benefit Roller Lashes
Also -- applying it "correctly" makes a huge difference. Use very little product (wipe the excess off on the top inside edge of the tube), swipe tiny swipes on each lash from root to tip -- you should do maybe 30 to 50 swipes per eye. I also like to put mascara on both the top and bottom of my top lashes. For bottom lashes, I use the end of the wand -- like, the tip as if it were a pencil -- and rub it back and forth several times.

My absolute favorite for look is the Too Faced Better than Sex mascara. It gives me awesome volume and length, but unfortunately it crumbles horribly. My other mascara loves are the Benefit Roller Lash, UD Perversion, and Marc Jacobs Velvet Noir. I like really voluminous, full lashes that are fanned out and I get great results from all of these. For drug store options I like the Cover girl lash blast and the Loreal Carbon Black Voluminous, though I admit I haven't been trying many drugstore mascaras lately.
Ive not been impressed with either of the Dior mascaras I tried or the Benefit They're real. Ive tried a few Lancome mascaras and remember liking them, but I can't remember what the specific ones I tried were.
I use Chanel Inimitable Intense. Every time I try another mascara, expensive or cheap, I'm disappointed so I got back to Chanel. It's just a perfect all-around mascara.

The ones I like include: MUFE Smokey extravaganza, TF better than sex and IT Hello Lashes. I also really like Essence's WP big ol' volume which is $4 at Ulta. So as pp said there is never a consensus. It really depends on what you want. That sample kit is a really good idea. Also, I too try and get the smaller tubes of prestige mascara for the reasons already given.
Bobbi Brown and Hourglass are my favorite but I refuse to actually buy mascara since it's so easy to get for free if you buy as much product as I do, and it's hard to come by free samples of those. Roller Lash and Perversion are my go tos.
The worst mascara on the market is NARS Audacious.
Me too. I don't get the love. It turns my lashes black, but adds no volume or length. As proof, I wore it when I went to Nordstroms for foundation, and the woman was like, "oh do you want to try a mascara? You don't have any on, right?"
"This prick is asking for someone here to bring him to task Somebody give me some dirt on this vacuous mass so we can at last unmask him I'll pull the trigger on it, someone load the gun and cock it While we were all watching, he got Washington in his pocket."
Bobbi Brown Smokey Eye - Love this stuff. Not too wet and gives nice volume and length. It's kind of pricey. Too Faced Better than Sex - good volume and length, BUT it flakes off on me throughout the day Maybelline Full and Soft - I really like this stuff and use it when I'm doing more of a toned down eye. It gives good length and some volume, but when I do a darker shadow/liner I need something that stands out more Tarte Tartiest mascara - this is a wetter formula and lengthens nice, but can clump my lashes together if I'm not careful. It's a nice shiny black Tarte gifted - good volume and length. I don't have issues with it flaking. I use this one when I can't afford to spend $30 on the Bobbi Brown!
I have tried a lot and the one I keep coming back to is Dior Iconic Overcurl. TF BTS looked nice, but flaked and made my eyes itch. Benefit They're Real was fine, but the biggest pain to remove. Chanel Volume de Chanel is also fine, but nothing special for the price tag.

Tarte's Lights, Cameras, Lashes gives me length and dark color but no volume. TF BTS gives me volume and length, but sometimes gets a little clumpy since it seems to dry out fast. UD Perversion seems to be my favorite right now, because it gives me a little volume and good length.
So individual based on what you're working with and what you hope to achieve.
I'm using Benefit's "They're Real" which doesn't irritate my eyes. I find Lash Blast very similar. I love BTS for night time, but my lashes are already kind of long and I wear glasses, so extending isn't a good plan most days.

The only one I go back to and wonder why I ever left is Chanel volume de Chanel. I just got a new tube this week and my husband asked me if I was wearing false lashes. I decided it's going to be the only one I wear for now on. I do love the look of tf better than sex, but it gives me raccoon eyes. I feel like the Chanel has the same look with no raccoon eyes.
Does anyone know when nordstroms does the buy 2 get 1 free mascara event?
I have so many mascaras that I love, it's hard to choose a favorite. I haven't tried everything, but I have tried a lot. I like to buy the lash stash kits from Sephora or I buy little mascaras on eBay.
My favorites have been
YSL volume effet faux cils and the baby doll one.
LancĂ´me hypnose star and definicils
Clinique high impact
There are lots of other ones that I like or will use, but these ones I will pay good money for if I have to.

I'm really not a HG mascara person. I have a pile of them that I use depending on my mood and the look I'm going for. But these are the ones I like best.
UD Perversion is fabulous for night out lashes or topping off a dramatic, smoky eye
Smashbox Full Exposure is a good, fringy mascara if that makes sense. When I want my lashes to look fuller but not heavy, this is the one I go for.
IT Cosmetics Tightline is perfect when I'm trying to go nearly bare or natural.
I haven't like any of the TooFaced mascaras I've tried and I've had a few samples.
Light Camera Lashes was no better no worse than most of the drug store brands I've ever tried so I'm rather meh on the whole concept.
