If you needed a new (to you) car for less than $15k, what would you get?
Things I need: low miles and good gas mileage
Things that would be nice: decent amount of room, more than two doors, decent quality interior (doesn't need a lot of features, just not cheap looking knobs and such)
I also love my kia sportage and H loves his optima - he has the hybrid so he gets fantastic gas mileage but I don't think you could get it for under 15k. my gas mileage is just ok. My SIL has a Cmax (ford) - she loves it and it gets fantastic gas mileage. not sure on price though

CAR TWINSIES!!! I am a Kia nut. I am pretty sure it is all we will ever own.

I'd like to. I'm really disgruntled about the clutch going out and don't trust it anymore. Plus, I guess I didn't realize how fast Tman was going to grow and now it's really not comfortable even with just the two of us. Throw James in there and it's like a clown car.

Yeah we've never owned Kias before - we are happy with the quality but I wouldn't say I'm terribly brand loyal. For me it's about bang for the buck, especially since we buy new. I have a feeling my next car will either be a GMC acadia (front runner), Hyundai Santa Fe or Kia Sportage. I would love a ford explorer but my dad would shit himself - he worked for GM for 37 years.

I drove a Kia for 10 years and it was a great car with great gas mileage.
I'm not a Subaru owner for life, but I'd definitely get a Kia again if I had to. I know they're super economical and great little cars for the money. You could probably get a great deal on a new one.
I've had 2 Camrys and loved them both. Enough to trade the first Camry in on a Lexus and buy a second one when DH was complaining he was driving his car too much and wanted to preserve the mileage since he was never planning to buy such a fancy car ever again. (Our other car - mine - is a Highlander. It was between a Highlander and an Explorer but I found a crazy deal on a highly upgraded Highlander as used so that ended it the first day I was in the market. Almost brand new but sold as certified so it got a longer bumper-to-bumper warranty and had all the bells and whistles I wanted in the color I wanted so the hunt ended before it began. lol.)
Plus, if you're buying new, Toyota is offering 0% on some models right now.
My son and daughter both bought Nissans (Rogue and Sentra) and both like them. My daughter drove Nissans the entire time she lived in Japan and was fairly pleased with the performance and durability. I'm not as sold on them here but the people I know who have them seem to really like them.
Try to find certified used as opposed to new. And prequalify through BECU or another CU. BECU will finance any car that is two years old or newer as "new" and with a lower percentage than used.
I'd buy used and go either in the direction of a toyota or chevy (mil has an older chevy aveo that even i'm surprised the space on the inside). possibly a kia. If gas mileage is a big one then i'd say get a diesel jetta or other vw. You can look at around 40mpg in one of those ( but the trade off is fixing things will cost a little more).
H drives a little civic for a commuter, he gets about 40mpg but its also much older (95') and if anything breaks its beyond easy and cheap to fix. We should also be able to resell for the same price we bought it because of how sought after good little commuters are.
We traded in our VWs for new fords. H got the focus for the gas mileage and it is nice inside I think it was around 14k and he has pleather interior - like a step up from basic. I got the F250 for hauling stuff around and it was obviously a lot more, but we got them during the sales. His was end of the year and mine was black friday

I LOVE my 4 Runner. We were into the German cars for a long time and H took a huge hit getting out of his VW that was getting way too small in the back seat for DD. We trade in our cars often and it will be nice to not be negative for once with the 4 Runner and my H's Tundra (though, he swears he's keeping it forever - I'll believe it when I see it).
I have loved my 2009 ford escape. I can't say enough good about it. It has 110k miles on it and I have never has to get any major work done on it. It's so reliable and the perfect size for our family. I would get another one if they didn't change the model. I don't care for the cross over look of the new escape
