I'm off work for most of next week and it is (finally!!) perfect hang out lazily reading outside weather in Chicago! If anyone has any book recommendations I'd appreciate them.
My recent recs are -- Eligible (Curtis Sittenfeld): Modern re-telling of Pride and Prejudice set in Cincinnati, OH. Breezy, fun read with super short chapters which made it an awesome book to read on my bus/el commute to work
Garlic and Sapphires: The Secret Life of a Critic in Disguise (Ruth Reichl): Enjoyable, light memoir focusing on Reichl's stint at the NYT restaurant critic
Gloria Steinem's memior My Life on the Road was also fantastic!
The books that I've given 4 or more stars to recently are The Sandcastle Girls The Girl Who Slept with God The Art of Hearing Hearbeats Secret Daughter Crazy Rich Asians Becoming Nicole A Window Opens Best Boy Circling The Sun
I have really enjoyed the travel memoirs by Tony James Slater. He's self published on Amazon and are often on the Kindle lending library. I randomly downloaded his first one a couple years ago and have since read the rest. They are light fun reads, and he's really funny!
I also recently really liked Americas First Daughter.
I've been reading trashy (but pretty well written) romance novels, so I'm no help. But I'm bookmarking this thread for more cerebral reading.
Well, I want this list
I tend to prefer historical romances. My friend recommended Cecilia Grant's A Lady Awakened. The first half of the first is not great, but the rest of the book and the next two are. I also generally enjoy Mary Balogh, especially the Survivor's Club books. All about those impacted by the Napoleonic Wars (and, of course, how they eventually find love).
I read The Engagements recently, it's an older book but great.
I also started reading the Neopolitan novels...starting with My Brilliant Friend. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest!
For a more serious read, Between the World and Me is eye-opening. It's somewhat painful to read at times, honestly, but worth reading. And given all the stuff that went down on the board in recent months, it's worth reading.
I'm reading 11/22/63 I haven't read Stephen King in years...this one is great. Long and a little slow in a few parts but overall I think it's really good
