I DIYed it with a hairbrush after watching a zillion videos on YouTube. I love the look, but couldn't personally justify the cost here locally. A hairdresser friend told me that it kills her a little to admit it, but that putting dye on a hairbrush and then brushing it through your hair actually works really well for baylayage.
My hair is balyage and I think it's a good solution if you're trying to make root grow out look more natural than a harsh grow out line. MIL always comments that she hates balyage because it does look like somebody just let their roots grow out.
Mine was balayage last time I got my hair done. My hairdresser uses a balayage comb, which I am guessing would work similar to the hair brush method. But mine is not that dramatic, it really just breaks up the color at the bottom of my hair, it is like two levels down from my base which is lighter than my natural color.

I get balayage done and I love it. I don't go often to do my hair and this is a great solution because you never know. Plus once the sun gets it, it makes it look even better. My hair dresser did my hair for the wedding on sat and commented that my hair looked awesome even though I last went at the end of December! So it's totally worth it for me. I never get it done on my top layer of hair and you would never know how grown out it is. Do it!
I will say that with mine the streaks kind of drive me nuts and I pretty have to curl my hair all the time. Which is frying my ends and sometimes I just want to wear it straight.
I think that the way to be able to wear it straight and not have to curl it is to make in not so ombre and stick to at most two shades lighter than your base. So the effect is more "sunkissed" than dyed if that makes sense.

I may DD later--trying to keep my photos at a minimum on this board. But here's a quick selfie. I just went for subtly slightly lighter throughout the bottom portion, using my fingers to take the dye on a few strands up slightly higher so that there wasn't a line from the brush. I'm already blonde(ish), so I didn't use a toner, but I would definitely recommend using a toner if you're starting with darker hair.

Your hair looks great! What YouTube videos did you find most helpful? I've been cutting and coloring my hair at home for years but going lighter is tricky. I've been really tempted to try it though and I can always go darker if I mess it up.
