The Boston Globe did an even longer piece on him a few weeks ago, and it mentioned how his kids would stop by some nights and keep him company while he cleaned, and how all their friends knew and loved him. Such a lovely story

Awe! What a great family. My neighbor is positively giddy because her son is got into the University where she works, and is going in the fall. It is a huge savings for them (full tuition is almost $50K a year, not including room and board, though he probably would not have had to pay full tuition, even if she didn't work there).
My mom's cousin worked at Howard University for 20 years making less than he could have elsewhere to get his kids free tuition. He has 1 more kid that needs to go to college, but none of the older 3 took advantage of the free tuition (1 didn't go to college, so 2 really). I am so pissed at them. I would have been all over that. It is not like Howard is a shitty school. I really hope the youngest at least tries to go there. And the 2 that decided on other schools have student loans for the schools they decided to attend. Such a waste.

DH's stepdad was a professor at Oklahoma State before he retired, which made tuition for SS1&2 free, but neither of them wanted to leave their friends, so they ended up not going. They both ended up going to the local CC a few years, then SS#1 went to a 4-year school until his financial aid ran out. I guess I don't understand why anyone would pass up a chance for free college tuition.
andwhat what a wasted opportunity! Howard is an amazing institution; your cousins missed the boat on that one.
I know. I have said so many times that I would go back and get another degree there if I could take advantage of this since his kids didn't. They are still young, so I don't know if they realize what they missed out on.

Where did they go instead? It's not like going to Howard would have been settling.
Shepherd University in WV. Howard was too black for him. Which is probably true. He is weird. He never graduated and wants to live off grid or something.
One is at Clemson. Good school, but she doesn't have a major that required her to go there or deserving of the student loans she is going to have. And her major is not likely to bring in enough income to cover the loans.
He still has one more, but he is kind of weird like the first one, so I don't know what he will do.
I wish he would have been more forceful in them at least trying Howard. Even I tried to talk to them and explain how fortunate they would be to not have student loans, but no dice.
My Stepdad worked at the college I went to. I went to college for free along with 5 of my siblings/step-siblings. He didn't plan it that way just happened to work at a university but it's a good plan if you have a lot of kids!! All of us got in on our own too, except for my brother who he had to pull a few strings for! We all applied on our own first. My education was worth over $100k then but now the school I went to is over $50k a year I heard!

Aww, I love this even more.
A free ride at BC is pretty awesome. What an amazing gift to his kids. As one of the kids though I would have been SO NERVOUS about maybe being the one sibling that didn't get in!
Hopefully they'd still pay something if a kid went to a different university. At CMU, they offer employees' kids ~$7k reimbursement if they decide to go somewhere else. I think they changed it since I left, since IIRC it was either full tuition or a higher % when I was there.

I believe Boston college participates in a consortium where employees kids can go.
My h works at a major university in Boston with free tuition for children as well. When I worked there my colleague was sending his third kid there. Fantastic deal.
