They told me one name over the phone, which was the name I had in my mind. Then sent me an email with a different name, that I completely read over. Totally, totally my fault.

I made a job offer to the wrong person once. But really, I just picked the wrong candidate. It's been almost 3 years and I still regret it. I thought that I was picking the best choice of two candidates who were similar at the time, and that it was good that I was choosing someone with a different approach than me. The person I didn't pick was promoted by someone else not long after, has grown exponentially, and is still someone I work really well with. The one I picked is a dud, hasn't stepped up to the position at all, and might not last much longer.
I guess what I'm saying is, your situation is horrifying, but at least once you correct it, it will be over. The awkwardness of rescinding the offer will be way better than having the wrong person for the job.
