FWIW, I thought it was common knowledge, and I am pretty sure I read a post about it on the boards. I even went through my PMs (which I never delete) and it wasn't in there. I don't know how else I would know if I hadn't read it here.
Well, I don't know the ekaterina post history because I can't keep infrequent posters straight and/or I have the memory of a goldfish. Was this information previously known, or just released today?
This is how I am understanding it.
LHC created ekat's AE with her email. Astrid thought it was odd, so she checked the IP and it was LHC. Only mods knew via their super secret board. After she posted a bit as ekat, Dogwagrercountess said it was LHC, but ML blew her off. Eclaires, today, said LHC and ekat were the same person. How DWC and Eclaires knew, no one knows.
I mean, I don't think ANYONE here is cool with trolling. But I have to admit it feels weird to me that it was confirmed by mods to the board at large.
I'd like to state for the record I've never met oldpantsparty.
FWIW, to put people at ease, 98% of the time no one knows who the ae/trolls are unless an IP request is asked for. An IP isn't asked for unless someone is really trolling. We had one on the makeup board recently (of all places). This was just known because she used a variation of her email address and astrid was making sure it was really her.
So it's not like we all know all the IP addresses, and who is posting as who.

Good.
Because who would create a cat AE named maria? A dumb idiot, that's who.

My understanding is that mods could not see an actual IP address, just if it was a match to another user. (To appease the security privacy concerns for other users.)
Can they actually see the IP address?
Mods can't. I'm not actually certain what admins can see.

I intended it as a protection for LHC. I made a similar post for SueSue when something like that happened. I recall nothing more about the SueSue post so can't elaborate, but it was not intended maliciously. I don't ask for a check when someone does a "gbcnae" type screen name.

I would guess that our IPs, AEs, and private messages are accessible by someone whose name starts with a P. That's why I sell skin on the appropriate channel, iVillage.

Well, if a well known and beloved reg takes a break, creates an ae, and uses it to heckle someone also beloved whose h had just committed suicide, what would that label be?

...Patricia Heaton? Are you serious?!!?
Oh. I thought she was talking about the OTHER P person.

I have little sympathy for someone's AE being outted when the poster claimed she was stepping away to think about what an ass she had been and instead just made an AE to continue posting slightly assey things. I mean, don't pretend to be taking the moral high ground if you aren't really going to do it. I'd have a problem with an AE being outted if it was like a, "I have shit going on in my life and need help" AE. In fact, I have little problem with any random- not seeking help/specifically saying it's an AE to protect identity to discuss personal issues- AE being outted. *shrugs* Probably why I am not an admin:

I'm an admin of another proboards forum (loser alert).
I can see everyone's email address and IP.
It varies based on the settings of the forum. IME, the admins can choose who can see what and put them in categories (mod, global mod, etc.).

If I recall correctly, weren't people praising her "genuine" self-reflection during that break?
Unless some posts were deleted from that thread, I think heckling is a bit much. What she said wouldn't have come across as so terrible if it had come from someone we knew had been deeply involved in the board for years. It was a post she would have made under her regular name. And she didn't create that AE specifically for that purpose or to cover bad behavior. There was no pattern of harassment.
I dunno Tamb if I had your track record I would layoff with the staunch defenses.
But... but Tamb likes everyone. It's endearing. That's not really a bad track record is it?

How about adding onto that the fake daughter, changing her tone and spelling, and generally acting brand new just because she was supposed to be taking a break, blah blah blah? That doesn't sound shady at all to you?

FWIW, I don't think it's shady. I just think it's very LOL worthy and embarrassing.
And indicative of a pretty intense addiction. I mean, we're all somewhat addicted to this place, but to put on a big show about leaving (and returning) only to make up a new character to fill the in between space is.... special. Either leave and "reflect" or don't.

In Tamb's defense (LOL), I don't think she is defending LHC, more voicing concern about outing AEs-like a slippery slope argument. If it was okay to out THIS AE, what is the protocol to out other AEs and where is the line drawn. I think it may be a valid discussion, but I just personally can't bring myself to care. As long as people legitimately seeking help/advice aren't outted, out away my friends. I'm too busy hating Bernie to care about mod issues.
yes, but, if you got caught lying about details, you understand that we would laugh at you endlessly right?
Yes, I do.
But at least I'd have my two teenage sons to back me up.
I'm just catching up, but having two teenage sons is no walk in the park, but after 19+years of parenting I wouldn't even want imaginary babies. My AE will stick with teens, I think. Maybe imaginary girls. Possibly identical twins.
