Do you think the amount of weight you gain in pregnancy is partially due to genetics?
I ask this since I gained very little with my first pregnancy and after talking with my mom it seems that she was exactly the same way. We have very similar body types, so it makes me wonder if genetics play a role in how much weight we gain in pregnancy.
I do know that eating and activity levels effect weight gain. I'm just thinking generally here.
I'm sure it plays a role, just as it does when you're not pregnant.
Some people have to really struggle just to maintain a healthy weight and some can basically eat what they want and never gain weight. Those kind of differences are due mostly to your metabolism and genetic makeup.
This wasn't the case for me and my mom. My mom gained 60+ pound with both me and my sister. With my first pregnancy I gained 40 pounds but it was 100% my fault because I was on bedrest and eating out of boredom all day. This pregnancy I have been a lot more careful and as of yesterday I am up 20 pounds.
Yes, I think there is a big genetic component. My mom was tiny when she got pregnant and gained 8 and 6 pounds, respectively, with her first two pregnancies. Her second pregnancy was a stillbirth, and her doctors were concerned that her low weight gain could have been a factor, so when she was pregnant with me (third pregnancy) she did everything possible to gain weight. She would literally eat a Snickers while driving through McDonalds to get a Quarter Pounder, then go home and eat pasta an hour later, and she still only gained 12 pounds.
I did not exercise or watch what I ate when pregnant and gained 18 pounds with DS1 and 12 pounds with DS2. With DS2 my doctor was concerned that I wasn't gaining enough, so I made an active effort to gain weight without much success. I do not have a particularly hard time gaining weight when not pregnant.
I'm not sure how it works out. My mom gained 60+ with my older sister, 10# with me (with gastic bypass in between the 2 of us!)
I am 25w and still negative in weight. I think its just an aversion and the fact that I am still not ravenous, like I thought I'd be. I like do food , just don't crave/love much of anything yet.
I dont' know about genetics but I think our bodies are predispositioned to just gain a certain amount. First pregnancy I gained 35 lbs. this pregnancy i am two weeks away from delivery and only gained probably 18 at this point. I have done nothing different during these pregnancies and started at the same healthy weight each time. I am convinced my body is just doing what it needs to do and I have little control. I haved swelled a lot less this time is the only difference.

I don't buy the predisposition idea. I gained drastically different amounts of weight and it was due to lazy eating and no exercise the second time around!
I've actually gained a lot more than my mom did overall - even though she gained everywhere and I'm just all belly. We have very different body types though. You wouldn't know we are related.
A little bit. I gained around the same as my mom. Also, with DS1 I sat on my ass the entire time, never once worked out, ate whatever I wanted, and gained 40 pounds. With DS2 I started off in great shape, exercised daily (and hard) until the day before I delivered, watched what I ate, and gained...40 pounds.

This is what I am worried about. I wonder if there are anyone here that the doctor told them to go home and loose the weight?

Good question. My mom started out her pregnancies at a healthy weight. She was skinny in high school and average from then on. I was always average weight, never skinny or overweight. I started out both pregnancies at a healthy weight range for my height. My mom gained 20 pounds each time and lost it reasonably fast. I gained 40 pounds each time, lost it fast with my first DS and it took 1.5 years with DD. And then I gained 20 pounds back. With WWers and personal training I am finally back to my happy weight and DD is five. Now I need to work to maintain for life. I really don't want to gain again. My body is happy at this weight.
