My husband applied for a new job at his current company, not a promotion really but it would give him some opportunities for growth and he is tired of what he is doing now. He has been through 4 interviews and his current manager approached him today asking what the lowest salary he would take would be. I think they want to offer it to him but are worried they cannot match the salary he wants. I haven't really negotiated salary before and am out of my element.
He would take his current salary but would like to make more if possible. Should he begin with what is really his lowest or should he ask for more and hope they still offer the job to him?
If he would take $70, but wants $80 what should he say?
I appreciate any advice, I have been in the same job for 10 years and have never negotiated so I feel clueless.

This is especially tough with then asking what the lowest he would take.
I would say something like, "I'd really like X for this position. I'm really excited about the job and I know we can come to a mutually agreeable salary." With X being a little more than his current salary.

I do like that phrasing. It is his current boss who approached him even though she would not be overseeing him when he got the job. I think she is doing it to help (I hope)

Wait. Does he think they can't match his current salary or what they think he wants to make? If it's the latter, then for X, I would say what he thinks it's a GOOD salary for the position.
If he really wants it, he can be a little more conservative with that number, but if he goes really low, that's probably what they will offer.

They are so secretive about salary stuff, if he works for the same company that I do, still. Usually to not need a huge HQ approval, 12% increase is the norm for a promotion. I would say something close to that and see where it goes.

One and the same. It is so hard to know what to say without ANY context! He is so ready for a change but cannot take less than he is making and I think he deserves more, lol

He should definitely aim higher and then see what they come back with. Noting that he's flexible when he gives them the figure will be helpful. I totally get being ready for a change, with this company it's so common to get to that point. Fingers crossed it works out for him!
