My go to present for boys or girls is legos. I figure that even if they aren't that into legos, having a classic building toy is always a good thing. And if they are into legos, then more bricks are always good. I also include a gift receipt.

DS just turned 6. He loves gift cards, and they don't have to be big. $5 for the local frozen yogurt place? He loves "paying" for his own stuff. He got a few solar toys. He put together the solar car and he really likes that, but we haven't had time for the solar robot yet. They are both in your price range. He also got movies, transformers, a subscription to National Geographic kids. My mom got him Legos with a suggested age of 12+. So we're working on that. He's smart and all, but couldn't she have found like an 8+ set of legos? He got the Lego movie too.
Bugs in the Kitchen- board game with a hex bug. This is my new go-to gift for the 5-7 age range. $20 on Amazon.
Oh, this looks like fun! DS would love this - he loves his hex bugs.
We have been doing board games as gifts lately. This Build a Robot game is very simple, but it is one of DS's favorites, and the friend that he gave one to loves it as well. I bought it at Barnes and Noble for $16.95.
Lego are good. Big puzzles (100 pieces) might be good. Books are great. You could do the first new books in a series.
We got some really neat stuff recently. A little planting set, terrium, kite. All interesting toys, but not something a child would do on their own and bit messsy.

Science kits - there's one that comes in a bottle. We have a really good Parent-Teacher store and they have an amazing selection of fun toys and activities.
