Fashion question

Sooo online shopping and I'm finally curious enough to ask. What is the purpose of a bralette? Is it to wear instead of a bra with tank tops and such that would otherwise just show bra strap/ side bra because arm holes are bigger? Or is it just something else? I'm fashion dumb.

Like lingerie? I'm no modern fashion expert, but I think bralettes were originally meant to be used as lingerie - stuff you wear during/before sexytime. Somehow bralettes became a thing to wear outside of the bedroom. I assume it's a trend that was loosely based on 90's fashion and preteens wearing lingerie as clothes because their breasts aren't big enough to need more support yet.

See thats what I kind of thought. But now i'm seeing them on all these clothes websites mixed in with the shirts and stuff and i'm trying to figure out what the deal is lol

The ones I've bought in the lingerie section at Nordies I treat like bras, under clothes only, like a shelf-bra cami without the cami layer. The girls look better with better support but I get REALLY sick of underwires every day.

But as clothing outer layer or something? No, i don't understand.
