I was not a huge fan of the yellow color of our house when we moved in 4 years ago, and we swore we would re-paint or re-side (it's currently just wooden siding painted yellow) as soon as we could, but four years have come and gone and it just is not in the budget. I am not against painting it ourselves except that we are both terribly fearful of getting up on a high ladder or walking around on the roof to paint the upper level.
So I think I narrowed down that the yellow doesn't bother me so much as the yellow and red together. I was hoping to just repaint the front door (re-painting the shutters would still involve someone having to go up on the roof). Do people do doors that are different colors than shutters?
Here is my house:
So two questions: 1) Can I get away with leaving the shutters red and doing a different color front door to liven it up a little? If so, what color door?
2) If you think I need to paint the shutters too (maybe we can hire someone to just paint the upper ones?), what color would you suggest for everything?

I'd paint the shutters before the door since the shutters are what is on the yellow. Painting the door would do very little. I'd probably choose a dark charcoal for the shutters.

our house is pretty close to the same shade of yellow, right now the shutters are sage, I hate them. I am getting black as soon as it's in my budget so that's my suggestion. I would paint/ replace them if you can, I don't like the red and yellow either

The brick, which may be hard to see since the house is in the shade, is a reddish brick that won't be leaving because $$$$. Do you think grays and blacks would look OK with that?
I would definitely remove the shutters to paint, but one of us (ahem, DH) would still have to go out on the roof to get them off. We are not crazy about that idea. He is extremely afraid of heights (I get vertigo if I am high up). So we'd still probably hire that out.

I would take the shutters off and paint the shutters, then once they are put back up see if you think the door should be painted. I like the idea of navy shutters.

Also, I probably should have put this in the OP, but I love "fun" front door colors, so I would like something kind of bright more so than a black or grey.
I have hot pink Knock Out roses down further to the left of where the pic ends. I love them!
There are hydrangeas planted to the right of the stairs that are just now getting blooms so those will likely be blue (depends on the soil pH) when they fully bloom!

I like the navy suggestion, guys. I could see that working well with the yellow. Thanks!
I'll go get some swatches to start playing around with this week.
And you are right that doing a different "fun" color on the door might be too much. I do consider navy "fun" so that will work I really just wanted to avoid something like a white or a gray.

I think with some of these suggestions for the doors/shutters, I can start learning to not hate the yellow lol.
I'm not sure when or who painted it this color (the house was originally built in '61). The previous owners had this pale yellow color on like ALL of the walls inside the house, so maybe it was them and they really loved yellow? The interior paint was changed quickly when we moved in.

I hate the red and yellow together so I would do it all...not really sure what color though...charcoal sounds nice. I would love something in the blue family...like teal
