You can get the meal plan for both parts. I assume the issue would be if you have leftovers from the first meal plan and you are trying to use them on the day you check into the new resort.
We are doing our first split stay in October/November. Only because my kids want to stay at AoA and I refuse to stay there longer then a couple days. I hate having to pack everything up.
Plus with DVC you will need to be out of your first room by 11 (no late check outs allowed) and you could end up waiting until 4 or 5 for your new room. So you are roomless for a while which is an issue if you want your kids to nap in the room or if you want to be in the room at any point that afternoon.

We considered it when I couldn't decide but dh pointed out the no room during nap time as soon as I suggested it. I think when the kids are older it would be fun to do to try out different resorts.
Yes, we've done split stays several times and love it. It's really not a big deal at all. In fact, last time we did 2 nights at beach club, 5 at the swan & 2 at AKL. There is a decent chance your room will be ready by nap time - and if not, one day of a stroller nap isn't a big deal.
The other con (that I've read about) is that if you are trying to make dining reservations at 180 days, your first window opens at 180 days from your first check-in, but you can't make reservations for your second stay until 180 days from your second check-in. If you were on one reservation, you could make all reservations at 180 days from your first check-in (180+10). I didn't make any dining reservations for the first part of our stay, so I only got up for the 6 am madness one time, but I would have had to do it twice if I was making reservations on both stays.
Yes this is annoying. I had just 1 reservation to make for the second part of our split stay and I wish it was like FPs where you can book them all at once.
