A c/w suggested to start buying diapers or wipes whenever you are shopping to start a nice stash and spread out the $. I figure I can buy from target and exchange as needed.
Anything else I can start stocking away?
ETA: When did you start buying some of the big ticket items like crib, dresser, stroller, car seat, etc?
I'm not a big fan of the stocking up idea. It's too hard to know how many of what size diapers you need, what brand will fit your kid and you will like, what brand of wipes and diapers will be good with their skin, blah blah blah. Having to haul stuff back to a store to exchange when you have a baby at home is more of a PITA than it's worth. You're better off just buying it as you need it. If you use name brand diapers, Amazon Subscribe & Save at 20% off seems to be the best deal.
We started buying bigger stuff after the a/s, like the pack & play, crib, and glider for the nursery, kind of whenever we got a 20% coupon for BBB in the mail. We got a lot of stuff 2nd hand, and we started going through it, setting stuff up, etc. maybe around 7 months. I did not have a shower, but "shopped" at my leisure by putting stuff on registries at BBB and Amazon. Then I bought everything at the same time with registry completion discounts around 30-35-ish weeks.
I wouldn't stock up as you don't know what diapers or wipes will work. I ended up hating pampers wipes even though many people like them. Diapers I used one brand in newborn then switched once she was in ones and up as I liked the fit better for holding in blowouts.
I also lived in a 700sq ft apartment when my first was born so I had not room to anyway, lol.
Crib was the first big thing we got around 16 weeks. Stroller my mom bought at 20 weeks I think. Most everything else we got at my showers which were at 30 and 32 weeks. The last big item was her dresser which I ordered early on but came around 35 weeks. We didn't have a glider but I have heard that they can take a while to come in so if you want one to order it early:)

Ditto the pp. Don't stock up on diapers. You will receive some as gifts and perhaps take some home from the hospital - try them after baby arrives and that will help you figure out which brand to stick with.
I'm less picky about wipes but do prefer Kirkland wipes, so I will just stick with them for this baby.
I bought a pack and play pretty early because it was on sale. I was probably around 20 weeks. Since then I haven't bought anything else! We got so much stuff at my showers, plus gift cards that I'm not even sure what we'll spend on.
Oh, I forgot, I did buy curtains for the nursery (also on sale). But I've since changed my mind about how I want to decorate and I can't return so that was a total waste!
I'm not really convinced stocking up early would be worth it.

Second baby, so less exciting and fewer gifts. I needed a new infant seat and the one I liked went on sale at Amazon and bought it at 15 weeks or so. I bought lots of clothes at 21 weeks at a big consignment sale. I cloth diaper so did buy a few new diapers to round out what I need. With my first, I bought a couple outfits the day I found out she was a girl, otherwise I waited until the third trimester for most things.
I stocked up on cloth diapers with my first, and then calculated how old he'd be in certain months and bought clothes for those seasons when they went on sale. I lucked out that he was pretty much exactly on the month size for clothes.
With DD I bought the crib, dresser, stroller, and carseat at 29 weeks (waited for Black Friday sales) and a chair a couple weeks later.
As far as diapers I would wait after the baby is born so you can try different kinds. We started with Pampers in the hospital and tried a couple other brands that were gifts before landing on Huggies as our preferred brand. I buy all my diapers on Amazon S&S. I would suggest if you want to spread out the cost to buy gift cards to where you will buy the diapers.
We are not buying anything until after my a/s. We already have a crib, and my MIL has 3-4 boxes of stuff for us. (Which I've never looked at.) I also have 4 large Tupperware containers full of stuff from my sister.
But I'm just way to worried that something will happen hence no purchases yet:
I'm 20 weeks (tomorrow) and we've bought a rug and a dresser for the baby's room, but nothing else. I'm having 3 showers so I'm going to wait and see what we get before making any purchases.

With DD, we bought a Bob at a garage sale around 3 months ($75!!), along with a collection of other random stuff (pack n play for $10, bottle warmer for $1, audio monitor for $2, etc)
Otherwise I waited until showers and hand-me-downs before we bought much else.
Right after the anatomy scan I started buying some big things, including the stroller, carseat, and PnP. Around 24 weeks I bought an armchair for the nursery, crib, mattress, baby bathtub, diaper pails, sheets, bottles, a monitor, and sleepers, onesies, and sleep sacks. I actually didn't buy diapers and wipes until I was 30+ weeks.

I did stock up on diapers/wipes when they were running specials at Target and I had coupons (making them super cheap). I had no issues exchanging for brands/sizes later at Target. I bought the crib around 26ish weeks (viability) and we purchased the dresser a few weeks later.
We were lucky enough to have two showers, one from my work (40+ women in my dept) who all gave blankets, diapers, books, hygeine products, etc (we were team green, so not many clothes). They also all went together and got the glider.
Our home shower provided us with a ton more. We had purchased a lot of those kimono wrap white t-shirts and he lived in those + socks for a good month (it was July). We bought clothing as needed after that.
We didn't really buy anything until after viability. The first purchase was our rocker because it took 10w to come in. We bought the car seat and stroller at 34w I believe. We were team green and I placed orders for gender specific clothes and made 2 copies of the receipts. I bagged boy and girl stuff separately and kept a receipt with both. My mom washed the boy stuff and returned the girl stuff.

I didn't stock up on anything. For the next one, maybe wipes. Diapers are weird, and different brands fit better at different times, so I won't do that.
I like the idea of getting gift cards periodically, because, really, that way you're set regardless.
We bought the car seat in advance cause Amazon was having a big sale.
I bought a few packs of diapers, but only when Target was running one of their bonus gift card deals. I work close to a Target so as I got further along I would go over there once a week or so and shop the clothes sales. I got a bunch of outfits for a couple dollars a piece.
I bought the Bob before we were even pregnant, cause it was on sale cheaper than I could find it on Craig's list.
Lastly, I bought a bunch of books at the library book sales. Our library has a great deal on the last Sunday of the sale where you can fill up a big box for $10. I just got all the board books that were left.
I haven't stocked up on anything. I like the least amount of stuff as possible and considering I don't know what size/type/sensitivity she will have, I don't want a bunch of diapers and/or wipes going to waste. I have a solid foundation of basic clothes and needed items (tub, bedding, car stuff, a few toys, mobile, etc.) and we'll get what else she needs as we go. I saved a bunch of gift cards from my shower and returns so we can use those as needed.
For big ticket items, I got a few for my shower around 26 weeks and then finished off with the Target and Amazon completion discounts around 32 weeks.
