What are the chances dd becomes a more efficient breastfeeder? She takes forever, and falls asleep in spite of tickling/taking her sleeper off. It's just because she's still so little (one week), right?
I'm wondering if the nipple shield is making her slower, but she just won't latch without it. My nipples are still so flat.
I still also feel so awkward holding her while breastfeeding. Like, I can't imagine feeding her while at a restaurant or anything- it fully takes two hands.

Yes, she'll wake up for sure. Also very likely to speed up on nursing, but some babies are just faster than others.
Yes, the shield is slowing it down. Have you tried using it initially but unlatching, taking it off super fast, then re latching without it? That's the usual technique although it usually takes a few tries and 4 hands on deck. The idea is to use it long enough to draw your nipple out and get the baby comfortable and sucking before attempting to latch without it. Or you could try pumping for a minute first to draw it out but that's more of a pita and doesn't help calm the baby in the meantime.
It gets much easier to hold them as they get bigger and less floppy. Use pillows at home and use the diaper bag when you're out to prop her up for now. It sometimes does still take 2 hands when I'm out but it's not so awkward anymore and practice makes perfect.
First wake up. DD2 was crying in her sleep at her usual wake up time so I fed her. She slept for a total 2 hours (in 4 chunks) yesterday... daycare listened to my instructions on bottles but not sleep so I know what we need to chat about today at drop off. Also hoping they start burping better because she is ridiculously gassy.
I'm so tired I could cry. Dd won't fall asleep for me- all she wants to do is eat. Literally, she will fall asleep for everyone else, but if she smells me, she wants to be attached.
We are going to have to change how we handle nights bc I cannot get by on 4-6 hours of sleep/night.

Is your h back to work? Mine goes back tomorrow and I'm dreading it. He's been taking her so I can get a good stretch between about 6 and 9, but he'll be leaving at 6:30.

I swear, my nipple withdraws as soon as I take the shield off. I can try to do it more quickly. I would love to stop using it.
Bernadine unfortunately everything you are experiencing is so normal. Breastfeeding is kinda terrible in the beginning in my experience. One day though it just clicks and is so much easier. My kids got efficient pretty early and took one side at a time.
I used a shield for a couple months with both babies. My nipples were flat at the beginning too. I kept the shield in my bra, which helped with ease of use.
Ugh, I pumped twice in the middle of the night- 12am and 4am and got less than an ounce. Wtf. So demoralizing. I think I must have got the pump on wrong or something as I'm getting 5oz now in 7mins.
Bernadine my dd1 took up to an hour per feed when she was a newborn but by 3-5 months she was down to 15-20 mins.

Can you do side lying nursing? I did that the whole first night with dd. She was literally latched all night while I slept
