Macy's Parade: NYC Weekend

we are thinking of booking a trip to NYC for Thanksgiving this year. We want to see central park, some museums and shopping, etc. and The Parade!!

Any tips for where to stay for the best viewing?

It's my 40th bday gift so we are thinking of an slightly upscale hotel.

I believe the Macy's parade website has "hotels with parade view" hotels listed... or at least they did a few years ago when we looked. I don't remember the specific hotel but remember one getting raves as the free breakfast room a couple floors up overlooked the route so you could eat and get a longer view than just what one room window will provide - although you'll be fighting other hotel guests for a view.

You probably knew this, but be prepared for room rates several times the regular price plus a minimum night stay requirement.

The prices are pretty steep, but I am not surprised.

we did the Macy's parade in 2006. this was a last-minute decision so we stayed at the Salisbury hotel. www.nycsalisbury.com/ it was cheap, clean, no frills but really walking distance to the parade route (like a block). it was cold and rainy when we went so it was nice to get up early and get out quickly without having to hike to far (this is NOT a luxury hotel).

also, the night before the parade, all the balloons are inflated around Central Park and you can go see them. there is a balloon handler at each one that can talk to you about the balloon. it was pretty cool.
