I believe the Macy's parade website has "hotels with parade view" hotels listed... or at least they did a few years ago when we looked. I don't remember the specific hotel but remember one getting raves as the free breakfast room a couple floors up overlooked the route so you could eat and get a longer view than just what one room window will provide - although you'll be fighting other hotel guests for a view.
You probably knew this, but be prepared for room rates several times the regular price plus a minimum night stay requirement.

we did the Macy's parade in 2006. this was a last-minute decision so we stayed at the Salisbury hotel. www.nycsalisbury.com/ it was cheap, clean, no frills but really walking distance to the parade route (like a block). it was cold and rainy when we went so it was nice to get up early and get out quickly without having to hike to far (this is NOT a luxury hotel).
also, the night before the parade, all the balloons are inflated around Central Park and you can go see them. there is a balloon handler at each one that can talk to you about the balloon. it was pretty cool.
