Suppose technology existed to clone historical figures from any era. Further suppose someone cloned a bunch of them.
1. Why would they be brought back?
2. Who would you bring back?
1. Maybe there is a belief that people who were influential for the greater good the first time around or who had a big historical impact could bring the same sort of help in the present day. I don't even think past negatives would necessarily be seen as a downside, since they could probably hope to change that via nurture and a belief that it was not just nature. (For example, even if you have somebody who was a racist/homophobe/misogynist the original go around and raise them with two dads or something.)
I did a clone story for Camp in 2014. I didn't have it all figured out (understatement) but part of the overarching goal was to create a supreme military force by cloning people who were seen as "ideal" soldiers in a post-nuclear war time period.
2. This would depend on my goals were in this situation. Do I want a great orator? Then I might try to clone Winston Churchill or Martin Luther King, Jr. Ditto finding big names for major military minds, musicians, poets, political leaders, whatever.

A society that had somehow lost its literary works would bring back those whose writings they heard were influential.
But they'd only be able to bring back those whose genetic material they could find. Otherwise, you're going to be overwhelmed with people to be brought back.
