Less than a year after moving back to Canada, I'm about to join the IL ranks once more. H and I are moving to the US for a year. He got a lectureship and I am so pleased for him! Some aspects of America are foreign to me, and we'll be in Texas (which is probably also foreign to H, lol). We'll be right on the border, and I am excited to improve my Spanish and for DD to learn some.
RockNVoll, those trips sound awesome! We'll need to find a flat once we get there. Plus we'll have to buy a used car. It's going to be a pricey move, since they don't reimburse relocation expenses for contract profs, but H couldn't afford to turn it down since he's just starting his academic career.
UnderProtest, wow another big move! How are you feeling about all of that?

loira I'm very conflicted. Neither of us had an interest in moving to the NE and we know no one there. And I was just feeling settled in London, I dread starting all over again. But I am happy to be going back to the US and have my own house again.

I swear I replied to this but I don't see my response. It stinks that they're not covering any of your moving expenses, especially since apartments don't come furnished like they do here. But hopefully it's a great stepping stone for your H's career. Will you be able to work? Do you want to?
I'll have to apply for a green card - and since it's spousal sponsorship, the process takes longer than if it were a dependant visa or a work visa sponsored by a company. I'd like to work eventually (not sure I'm cut out to be a SAHM), but because we're there for such a short period of time, I'm not going to bother looking for a permanent position. I have a couple of clients in Canada and they help to bring in extra cash for now, but maybe I'll find some clients down there, too.
Yes, the lack of furnished flats is maddening! The only ones we've found online so far are super expensive corporate rentals. I'm hoping we can put the word out to the other staff at the university and maybe find a sublet if a prof is going on sabatical or something.

We moved from London to south Texas about 1 1/2 years ago. I still miss London, but get ready for some amazing Mexican food:-) It's a totally different lifestyle and the shopping is not nearly as good, but I enjoy moving and living in new areas. We are in Austin now, which I love. Good luck on the move!
