Can someone please explain this game to me like I'm your 90 year old grandmother?
I downloaded it for my pokemon obsessed 8 year old. We found one thing in our driveway last night. Today we thought we'd walk around our neighborhood, but Im not seeing anything? There is one thing floating way off in the distance, but it's at a shopping center that we'd have to drive to.
Is this not something may kid can pkay by himself?
Just tried again going the other direction from our house. Found 2, but had to go way further than I'd be comfortable with him going by himself. I think maybe this one is not for us.
Ha ha, the first time I heard of this app was today from a friends FB post. She had a bunch of people in her backyard, like just all converged there at once, she had no clue what was going on. Turns out it was the most prized guy and he was in her backyard. I thought it was hilarious.
I am also too lazy for this game. Thank goodness it is not yet in Canada unless it is from some unsafe sight.
You should be finding more. Down in the right corner is a little button that you can click and see how far the nearest Pokemon are. Sometimes you just need to click the one closest to you and it will pop up. I hope that helps.
Ok, how does this work? I click on them and it shows little foot prints, but not a direction or anything?

This was my experience with my 7 year old. It is fun to play together, but further than she's allowed to roam without an adult. Although that's probably a good thing anyway because she's not always that aware of her surroundings without playing a game.
The other things are the stops and gyms. You should be able to catch Pokemon without going that far. It's my understanding you need to go to the stops to get refills and other special stuff and the gyms to battle.

I would not like this. Someone already found a body, how long until this game gets people arrested for trespassing or shot or something.
I'm getting old. All I can focus on is knowing people get distracted so easily and someone is eventually going to hurt or kill themselves while walking/biking/driving distracted because of an augmented reality game.
The concept is hella cool, but I don't think they thought the safety aspect all the way through.

Yet people are still jumping fences and trespassing.
I'm honestly irritated with people focusing on the negatives of this.
A) it's a GAME
B) it will get kids (and adults!) off their asses to play
It's not the game's fault that some kid found a body. It probably would have been found sooner if more kids actually played outside.
And as far as people/kids walking in traffic- well, don't be so fucking dumb. Look where you're going and teach your kids to look where they're going. You can't prevent stupid (and yes, I know we love to try)
I had this downloaded and was all ready to start then I read on twitter that "it eats data like a fat guy at an all you can eat buffet" so I deleted. Talk about being an oldz :/

I mean, I would go straight up Clint Eastwood in Gran Torino if people were in my back yard because of this game. Is that really what's going on? The app is putting these things on people's private property and sending players to get them?
Eta: I realize that nothing is physically placed on anyone's property. Just wanted to clarify.

I should clarify, I don't think it is great to go on private property either. It would tick me off as well. She is a bit of a gamer herself, so she did understand after being told. I had never heard of this game until today and seeing her posts just cracked me up.

A lot residential areas don't have a ton of Pokemon. I haven't caught any in my house, and only a couple actually in my neighborhood. There are more in areas with a higher concentration of people.
I don't think it's as much of a game to let your kid walk around the neighborhood to play, but it'd probably be awesome if they needed to be entertained while you are shopping.
I love the game. My workplace is a Pokestop so it has been a lot of fun for us. I've seen a huge increase in the number of people walking around downtown since it launched. It's really nice.
We walked around in the heat this afternoon to get stuff. Finley loved it and our neighborhood was full of spots, all public places. The amount of research on the sites is mindblowing. Did places submit items or was it all compiled somehow?
David's not into this yet but I think it sounds really cool! He's 7 and I would go with him and would not trespass on private property, but otherwise think it actually sounds fun and I could see David wanting to go out and explore more. The dead body is just weird. That could be found by anybody out in nature, and I'd hate to discourage kids getting out of the house in case they find a dead body, lol. You know? Total fluke.

I think it's using google maps.
But it points out statues and tells the history of buildings...Google maps doesn't do that (does it?)

The company that developed this game is using the gigantic dataset the amassed for their earlier game Ingress, a game that also used physical landmarks as destinations for participants to visit and "take over" for their teams. So you can essentially use Ingress maps (as shortcuts) for Pokemon Go. People who played Ingress are somewhat at an advantage. They also know which of the sites used in Ingress have property owners who grew weary of so much traffic and can avoid those spots to avoid hassle, etc.
