Well, there was a thread about this recently, so I bought a few things and have been using them religiously since the beginning of the month. It's been about 3 weeks and I'm not seeing any difference yet. I'm giving it until the end of August before I try to figure out something else.
I use Paula's Choice Skin Recovery cleanser, 2% BHA lotion, and Skin Recovery moisturizers (one am and one pm). I'm usually not very good about my routine, but when I am I can definitely see a difference. My skin looks more even and feels soft without being oily.
Check out CeraVe PM moisturizer. It was my holy grail for years, but then I got sucked into the Asian beauty thread on the Makeup board and experimented. I haven't found anything I like better and I plan on going back as soon as I'm out of my current stash. One of my favorite bloggers has a great post on anti-aging and she highly recommends it as well. theacidqueenblog.com/2015/10/08/skincare-goal-spotlight-anti-aging/
Hi, I'm 40, too. In my 20s and most of my 30s, I was a major product junkie, so I have tried so many products, it's insane. A year or two ago, I started seeing my aesthetician once a month. She has me using almost one line entirely, for the first time ever. I am using more products than ever before (most of these because I have added them in, but a few at her recommendation), but for some reason, this routine feels more streamlined than any of the previous ones.
In addition to the aforementioned monthly facials, I will echo what @kirkette said about overall care--it doesn't matter what products you use if you aren't drinking enough water and eating enough fruits and vegetables. I know this one is not for everyone, but I also rarely drink alcohol lol, I don't smoke, and my caffeine intake is primarily a few cups of tea a week in the winter and a few S'mores Frappucinos in the summer. I workout several times a week, wear sunglasses and sunblock year round and sleep more than anyone over age 4 should. I think it all helps. Anyway, the products:
Randoms Depending on how my skin is behaving, I have a few products I might bring into the rotation. -When my skin seems on the verge of irritation or is irritated, instead of moisturizer, I use this and SPF. Dermalogica Ultracalming Serum Concentrate -If I'm going to be in the sun more than usual (and the following day also), I use this serum and SPF. Some people use it everyday, but for me, I wasn't sure it was worth the price of regular use? Skinceuticals C E Ferulic -If my skin is drier than normal, at night, I nix my Resveratrol serum and use this serum instead. Dermalogica Overnight Repair Serum
This seems like a lot typing it out, but it doesn't feel like it when I'm doing my routine. Oh, and it took me awhile to realize I don't like or need toner, so I don't use any.
Night (after removing makeup with micellar water): Cerace cleanser Witch Hazel toner 20% C serum Coenzyme Q10 serum Olay PM moisturizer
*I use the Cerave PM because it does not have spf in it. i like to use separate sunscreen.
I get the vitamin C and Q10 serums from Timelessha.com I tried Paula's Choice but was not overly impressed with the result. Timeless is 1/2 the price and, IMO, I have seen more results from it.
ETA2: I don't use eye cream. I read a couple places that it wasn't necessary because you can use you moisturizer for the same purpose. Its been working for me so far.,

In the morning: Mint water as a toner Skyn Iceland The Antidote Cooling moisturizer
At night: Burt's Bees oil cleanser Orange blossom water as a toner Vitamin C serum Neutrogena HydroBoost water gel Mario Badescu Aloe, Herb and Rosewater spray
Oh I think sfy raises a good point- most product lines are meant to work together with their other products. So I would try to find a line you like and stick with it. If there are holes in that line (they don't offer a specific thing you want), obv feel free to go outside the line, but try to stick with one line as much as you can.
I have noticed a massive difference in my skin over the past 8 months. I've been using one product line, been using it extremely consistently and I think it shows. I think consistency is key as well as sunscreen/block.
I keep it very simple, and I'm happy with how my skin looks. I have incredibly sensitive skin, and most fancy products actually cause a major reaction. I wind up returning a solid 50 percent of new makeup products I purchase, and I've had terrible luck with high end skincare. I can't use anything that claims to be anti-aging.
Cetaphil cleanser Almay makeup remover wipes for eye makeup Olay Sensitive moisturizer (day) Cetaphil moisturizing cream (night)
I was using an exfoliating scrub once per week, but I need to find a new one. I may just go back to a homemade sugar and coconut oil scrub but make smaller batches (it went bad too fast, even with lemon juice). I tried a Burt's Bees scrub, but I had a reaction to that.
Wash with cetaphil. Moisturize with cerave (the morning/night bottles). The end.
I'm 38, and I feel like my skin has been so much happier since I've been doing this. Before I used expensive products and several steps, and I always had breakouts, and redness and itchiness. Now my skin is old and happy, lol.
Morning: wash with shiseido super mild. Yes, it's technically a body wash, but it the BEST on my very acne prone skin. I've had almost no breakouts since I've started using it, and that's a damn miracle. Then apply sunscreen.
I wash with a black sugar and charcoal scrub, then a bar of charcoal soap, and follow it up with Andalou Naturals Ultra Sheer SPF 18 Daily Defense moisturizer. The moisturizer is new and I am not sure how I feel about it yet, but I needed something lighter and w/SPF for the summer (in colder months, I use Avene Rich Compensating Cream, which I LOVE).
Ok well the pic cut off. Let me try again- ETA: the first pic is in slightly different lighting, and I look freaking half dead, lol But I do think I see results, even in the other two pics, def IRL
Morning: CeraVe Hydrating cleanser Biore 50spf sunscreen (the one that was posted here a little while ago) CeraVe Hydrating Moisturizer (I think it's hydrating...it's not the PM one) Makeup
Night: I remove make up with these makeup removing pads my friend made me...I know they have lavender oil, but not sure what else. CeraVe Hydrating cleanser Skin Food Salmon Brightening Eye Cream (I found this on the Makeup board) CeraVe Hydrating moisturizer
