Yes, the park closes early & you have to leave. They make cheery announcements to remind you & guests with party tickets have wristbands. Tons of CMs wave through (nicely) removing everyone else. On those days there are no fireworks or nighttime parades for regular guests. There are special ones for the party guests after the park closes.
If you have a ticket for the party, you can enter the Magic Kingdom as early as 4 pm that evening (so if you don't have park hoppers, you can visit another park that day and still have a good chunk of time at Magic Kingdom as well). You'll get an event wristband on your way in (if you're already at MK you just go back to the entrance after 4 to get your wristband), and at 7 pm when the event officially starts, Cast Members will start to sweep the park for guests without wristbands and systematically shut off areas to guests without wristbands using ropes and additional cast members (on Main Street they form a human wall and head toward the exit, and you flash your band to get by). During the event, the fireworks are a special holiday version of Wishes (so, still fireworks, but not the same show). There's also a holiday parade (two different times) and the Celebrate the Magic projection show on the castle is largely the same, with some holiday bits added at the end. This year, they're adding a stage show in front of the castle as well, in addition to the random dance parties and whatnot around MK. And there's lots of characters out that you don't see in the parks very often (all of the seven dwarfs, Scrooge McDuck, princes with the princess in Princess Fairytale Hall, fab five in holiday attire, Sandy Claws, etc) so lots of photo opps.

You can watch the party fireworks from other places on property though if you need something to do at night. 4th floor of the contemporary has a viewing deck. The polynesian beach.

We are going next November (2017) with my in-laws. I was thinking it would be fun for DH and me to take DS1 to the VMCP just him. His birthday is in December and DS2 could go back to the resort with my in-laws since he will still be young.
I would go if you can swing it. We didn't go to a park the day we did a party; we swam, ate a huge breakfast & relaxed. Then headed over right at 4 to maximize the ticket.
