OK, I have a question about battling. I've got those graphics @supergreen posted about type matching saved on my phone. What's more significant? The type of your pokemon, or the type of their moves?
For example (this is probably a really bad example, but just go with it), let's say I wanted to take on a snorlax, which is normal type. The chart says I need fighting type. I know the best would be fighting type with fighting moves, but I don't have that yet. So would I be better off with my Hitmonchan, which is fighting type, but has steel moves, or my Pinsir, which is bug type but has fighting moves. If you're going to say "well pinsir is crap no matter what" then just pretend I gave a better example, lol.
The type of their moves is more significant. In your example I would go with the Pinsir. Unfortunately Pinsir is crap no matter what That's what makes Snorlax the best gym defender in the game. He has no decent counters. Normal type is only weak to fighting type, and even the strongest fighting type (Machamp) is no match for Snorlax's huge attack, defense, and massive HP.
Here's another example. Even though my Victreebel is a grass/poison type, he evolved with double poison moves. So I can't use him against water (like I could a grass type) because poison isn't great against water. Hence why I'm disappointed in him.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think what matters is the attacker's move type and the defender's pokemon type. ETA: That said, there is a same-type attack bonus (STAB) when the pokemon's type and move type match. But I look up the movesets for the individual pokemon here and that bonus is already accounted for.
What I have questions about it what happens when the defender has two types. Like say you are defending with a Parasect (Bug/Grass). Fire is good against both of those, so does it get a double advantage? Rock is good against bug but bad against grass, so what does the multiplier look like there?
Yes Poppy, you're correct. What matters is the attacker's move type, and the defender's Pokemon type.
If you're defending with a Parasect, and yes fire is very effective against grass and poison, yes the effectiveness DOES stack. Each "very effective" type matching does 25% extra damage, so yes a fire type would do 50% EXTRA damage to a combo bug/grass type like Parasect. This is why I don't like Pokemon with two types. It makes them double weak to certain types.
Have you guys used the appraise feature? I haven't heard anyone mention it. Apparently my koffing is the largest the lady has ever seen lol. So dramatic.
Yes I use it all the time! I'm super happy they added it. It's been really helpful to see instantly if a Pokemon is worth keeping. I look for Blanche to say "your Pokemon is a wonder! What a breathtaking Pokemon!" That's over 80% total IVs. Every single one of my evolved Pokemon are tiny karinothing! Blanche says over and over "it's the tiniest we have on record." LOL.

Thanks! I've been going for my exeggutor when I needed grass type, but he has 2 psychic moves, so probably not a good choice after all.

Yes you're correct, double psychic moves means he's only a grass type while he's defending (not attacking). If you're looking for a grass type to counter water, you'd need an Exeggcutor, Vileplume, Victreebel, or Parasect with grass moves. I think the only pure grass type in the game is Tangela. And even it can have a poison move. Tangela's your best bet though, if you have them where you are. It's vine whip/solar beam combo does quite well against water. I was very lucky my Vileplume evolved with double grass moves, so that's what I use against water.

I've only ever caught 3 Tangela - my best is CP901 with grass/poison moves. My parsects all have bug moves. My vileplume is grass/fairy. I do have a 914 weepingbell with double grass moves. I can see this game can lend itself to a lot of trial and error, trying around different strategies.

I just went on a walk at work to hatch a couple of eggs. I hatched a stupid rattata and bellsprout, but I caught a rhyhorn! I've never seen one before, so I was pretty excited about it.
I was able to go into town for a bit while the kids napped. A 776 CP Clefairy (strongest I've ever seen) poofed on me after one toss (berry + ultra ball + great toss). Damnit. That would have been my new Clefable. I also had 97 (!!) Eevee candies but no worthy Eevee's. So I went ahead and evolved the best 2 I had. Got a mediocre 1750 Vaporeon with water pulse (blech), I'll use him as a gym defender I guess. And a 1684 CP Flareon with fire blast, finally (best move set).
I sat at a double lure with a lucky egg and evolved some stuff. New to me Persian and Polywrath. I'm happy with the Polywrath. Not great CP, but got good moves (mud shot/submission). Still super peeved about that Clefairy.
My current lineup. Man, stardust goes SO FAST. I had about 22k saved up. Powered up my new Polywrath twice, and spent the rest on my new Electabuzz. That was like 18k dust on the Electabuzz and he didn't even make it to my first SCREEN of Mons. Oh well. He's still more fun to battle with than Jolteon. Soooo boring.
swizz, there may be something to that. I wonder if it would work to swap logins? You'd have to really trust someone to not fuck with your pokemon, though!

I think that's a bannable offense if you're caught. I'm not sure how they would catch you, but I remember reading that.
YES THAT IS a bannable offense, DON'T DO IT! One account on one phone only. Don't do it!

This afternoon I found two Taurus literally right next to each other. That was a little unusual. I wonder if it was a nest.
I also powered up a gym near my house to Level 7 and added one of my guys to it. Another of my guys is in a Level 6 gym. If it's still standing tomorrow, I may try to level it up even higher and hope someone drops another Pokemon in. There's another Level 7 gym down the street that I'll try to get into if I can. Maybe I'll need to "run an errand" after dinner tonight.
Tomorrow we are going to the lake 2 hours away for the last time this season (the beach area closes on Labor Day). The last time we were there I caught 3 new-to-me water Pokemon (Psyduck, slowpoke, and Wartortle). DH has lifted his request on no PoGo during family time, so I can check the game a few times while we're there. I hope I can catch something good! A Slowbro or a Golduck would be AMAZING, I don't have either of those. Fingers crossed for me guys!
Yesterday was my first day back at work after maternity leave but one fun thing is my office has Pokemon! I've never ever gotten Pokemon in my house but I caught 20 yesterday at work including a Mankey, a Pinsir, a Golduck and a 590 cp Eevee!
We took the boys out last night to Poke hunt and do a gym battle as a successful first day of school treat.
We did a family take down of a gym, and the moment we got out of the battle the boys went to put their guys in. It kept erroring out. I had to explain to them that someone stole the gym from us. And filled it with 3 guys.
I got my new phone! It's seriously night and day. I didn't realize how bad the old one was getting. I was able to walk through the park nearby today and hit all 4 poke stops without having to restart the game a million times. I've been to that park 4 previous times and was only able to register 1 of the stops on my gps before it stopped working. I'm so excited. Now I'll actually be able to play right and hunt for animals.
I'm officially over the 100 candy mark for my Poliwags. Just 25 more candies until I can evolve my best 'Wag. And I have 111 Bellsprou candies. SO CLOSE!

I had a pretty good morning. I was able to collect coins from 2 gyms (although I've been kicked out of one of them since then), and I caught a CP 1139 Magmar. He doesn't have the best moveset, but he has one fire move, which I need. I made a mistake by leaving my Arcanine in a gym. He's the only semi-high level guy I have with fire moves, and he's been in that gym for 4 days! I need to remember not to use him as a defender again.
