The Mirena is great, but I was on my third one and just had brown discharge all.the.time. So I was done after 12 years and am back on the bcp and am thrilled. But I loved it for the first go-around!
I thought about trying it, but my experience with progesterone only bcp was not good. I bled all the time. Since Mirena is also progesterone based, I was afraid I would have the same problem. I have read a lot of posts on here about it and it seems like it works really well for most, but there is a small percentage that hate it--mainly due to bleeding issues. I have never heard that age makes any difference.
I'm on my second one and love it! No more period, only a little bloating 1 day a month, no more tender breasts and no PMS. I had no pain when they put it in or pulled it out. It feels like a pap test.
Oh, and increased libido...
I never had heavy periods, even before I started taking the pill at 18.
Are you wanting it for birth control or for hormone regulation? If it's just for birth control, maybe consider a tubal. I had an IUD many many years ago, and I had such a hard time with bleeding and cramps. Once I was absolutely, 100%, no doubts whatsoever sure that I was done having kids, I had my tubes tied. I never had major issues with being on hormonal BC, but it's still nice to know that I'll never have to worry about BC or whatever might happen due to long-term use of hormones.

Tell me about tubal. I absolutely don't want kids. This of course would cover the birth control aspect but I'm wondering about the heavy periods--could it help with that?
I've had a couple of friends recommend ablation for heavy periods but not sure if it covers the birth control aspect.
Trying to get in for a dr appt to discuss options but always curious to hear feedback here
A tubal won't affect your period. The ablation isn't necessarily used for birth control, but most doctors won't perform an ablation without you having a permanent BC in place, due to the risk of ectopic pregnancy.
8 years, 2 IUDs, no kids (and maybe never kids). I love it! No periods, no PMS, no nothing except spotting once a year. Insertion and removal hurt A LOT, but it's worth it to me. I had light periods and was on bcp ~10 years (since high school).
