We are planning a trip to Carlsbad (me, DH, DS1-10, DS2-6) at the end of August and are considering going to Disneyland for a day. I know we won't be able to see everything in one day, but the other days of our vacation are accounted for.
Is is it worth getting a park hopper ticket for only one day? Or should we just get a one park pass?

I think it depends on what you want to do. I have done one day in DL only and one day wth a hopper - both were great but it was dependent on what we were interested in doing that day

It does depend on what you want to do. Your kids are old enough that should be able to ride almost everything as long as they meet the height requirement.
If your kids are into Star Wars you will want to spend more time in Tomorrowland but if your kids are into Cars you will want a park hopper so you can check out Carsland.
The Haunted Mansion will be going down August 22nd so they can do the holiday install for Halloween and Christmas. There is also quite a few things closed in Disneyland because of construction for Star Wars land.
Both parks offer enough stuff to keep you busy for a day but park hopping is always fun. If you decide to just do Disneyland I would encourage you to splurge and do the dining package at the Blue Bayou for Paint The Night (8:45pm). The reserved parade area is on main street and it leaves you in a perfect spot to watch the fireworks after the parade.
I'd consider the hopper so you can do some classic Disneyland and also check out Carsland.
Since the parks are so close, you could try to play the fastpass game, getting them for the big rides at both parks, so you can hit the highlights at both. The Radiator Springs Racers were a lot of fun.
You need to do Paint the Night. The parade was amazing.
We spent two days in Disneyland with a 8.5 and 5.5 year old and didn't get to all of it! We probably won't go back so we wanted to do as much in Disneyland as possible and made the decision to skip CA. Also, the hopper passes were about $30 more if I remember correctly so we just stuck with one park.

I think there's plenty to do in DL without park hopping. With that said, it's very easy logistically to park hop at the CA parks. Unlike WDW, you can walk from one park to another in a few short minutes.

The distance between the main gates of both parks is 230 ft. You can easily walk that in about a minute and I think that a few crazed Disney children can do that in under 8 seconds especially if they spot their favorite character!
When are you going? If it's going to be crowded, I would just stick to one park.
Last week of August. Will be going on a weekday.
Check the schedule for the day you are going. The Haunted Mansion will be closed for holiday install around August 23rd. Hopefully it wont be too crowded at the park since most schools will already be back in session for the year.
