Thanks for all the advice / guidance / sympathy as Mr. Shoe & I worked to finish our basement - we're finally *done* with construction, and have most of the rooms complete, so I owe you all a nice update, here it is!
dr.girlfriend, you're right - we are lucky in that our lot slopes which means we can have a "walk-out" basement - right across from the fireplace area, we have a sliding door that walks out to our backyard. We added the window in when we built the house, since we knew we'd appreciate the natural light once we finished the place.
(Of course, the downside of this was that until we built our deck, the back door of our first floor had a 10' drop off into the yard below - yikes!)
That looks awesome - great job! We'll be finishing our basement in a few years, once we decide we don't need it as bike riding space in winter for the kiddos, so I love seeing what others have done!
@foodielicious, you caught me - I nearly changed the roll before taking the photo
We started construction on June 14th, 2014 - and our last day of work was March 20th, 2016. We had anticipated a 2-year project based on some friends that had done a similar effort.
Largely weekend warriors, though we did take a few weeks off here and there, and we stayed home to work on the project for a week at one point.
Congrats on being finished! I remember some of your posts because we will be undertaking our basement in a few years and will likely take a while as we have time and money.

It is lovely. I really like all the details, like the stone and brick. How many square feet is that? I start my basement finish project next week, but the only work I am doing myself is finish materials purchase, which saves me about $7K over a full service contractor. Any tips on lighting sources? I am struggling with that beyond lots of can lights.
That is amazing. H and I would kill each other if we tried to take on a project like that. I feel like we should hire you and your H to do our unfinished basement.
