I'm trying to remember how I handled this in the past, and I'm coming up blank! If I did have something like this happen, it was so far in the past I have legit forgotten.
I think what I would do is get him some small token gift, then either cook a nice dinner for him, or take him out for some kind of fun dinner, like a tasting menu or murder mystery dinner.
I agree with a small token and then plan a fun date. I had been dating a guy for about 3 months when his bday came along, he was a big Jack Daniels lover, so I got him some nice JD glasses and we went out to the country bar since that's not my fave place, but I knew he had been wanting to go.
So, a first date with a guy was dec 1st. Legit did not think about xmas gifts after 1 month of dating. But I got him mustache fridge magnets and a surprise mystery dinner.
Since it's early in the relationship, I would ask if he has plans and then plan something special but not extravagant. A baseball game, a brewery tour, a nice dinner out/movies.
I am super out of practice with this, but I agree with the suggestion to ask him if he has plans, then suggest something fun to do in line with his interests, or have him over for dinner. STBXH and I have never been big gift givers so my first thought is to do an activity.
For my current BF, we started dating end of Dec, his birthday was Feb. I just got a blank card and wrote "42 Things I Like About You" in it since he was turning 42.
I'm not big on material gifts, giving or receiving. We started dating 2 months before his birthday and I knew he was similar in my philosophy (we don't do Christmas or anniversary gifts) and I planned a night away to another city. It worked out well and we had a lot of fun.

So weird our parallel dating lives. Started dating Dec 2014. His birthday is also in Feb and he is in his early 40s (I know you're younger like me). Coincidence!

haha that is funny! Except my BF is a data analyst and yours is a musician, lol. One of those things is way cooler than the other.
