I think we need these! Since we moved to CO it seems to get light out way earlier here and my kids won't quit waking up at 5 or 6am. I'm pretty sure it's because their room is too bright. Do these work and what brand did you use? I already have curtains in there room but was thinking of putting a shade or something over the blinds?

We are total freaks about ds's room being a dark, calm environment. He has blackout roller shade, blinds and blackout curtains (lined with special light blocker) on his windows. He also has a sound machine and a small fan in the opposite corner. My friends laughed but this kid has been STTN since 12 weeks and has never once gotten out of his bed (he's 4.5). He sleeps like a log!
I have blackout accordion shades from Lowes that are cordless. I waited until they had a 15% off sale. They are mounted in the window frames and I still have drapes. They work great.

I have no suggestions as to brand, but I just wanted to say that having a kid's room completely dark makes SUCH a difference!
Our house has hurricane shutters (we live in FL), and when I was pregnant and heard about blackout shades, DH pointed out we didn't need them because of the hurricane shutters.
DD has had those things down her whole life. Her room is pitch black dark in the middle of the day. I started feeling kind of bad for her because she wakes up all confused and always asks me if "the sun is awake."
I figured I'd try putting them up. Disaster. She stopped napping and started waking up over an hour earlier in the morning!! I've now put them back down :-)
I'm planning to get some for the kids. I heard Target has some pretty good curtain panels too.
We had tried the panels from Target before getting the blackout curtains. We found them not as useful, b/c it is hard to get the (fairly small) panels lined up so that no sun gets through.
If you don't mind an investment, levolor has awesome blinds that can block light and also have a cordless option
We have these and have been happy with them as well.
One of the nicest things about blackout shades is that they alow you to keep the kids' bedtime on the early side even as it's starting to stay light out later and later.
Thanks for all the suggestions! I think I will try to get a shade in there since i already have curtains and see how that works. I want to get the black out drapes for the master bedroom.
DH and I were talking about this last night over dinner. We installed Levelor double cell insulating cordless top down/ bottom up in our master bedroom, living area and the guest bathroom when we built the house. They were spends ($180/per, which included installation- totally worth it), and they make a huge difference in the rooms warmth during the winter in our cold climate. Now we need to finish the project with the same shades in the guest room and the nursery. They also make the same shades with the blackout option, but I'm concerned that if the baby learns to sleep in the total dark the baby will never sleep when we travel to places without blackout curtains.
Idaho, do you travel that often that it would be worth it? Even if it was monthly I think it would be worth it it, when traveling you usually stay in hotels which have blackout curtains, and second ki are so over stimulated they sleep like logs ( at least mine do! They sleep better on vacation than any other time!)
I guess I was thinking more along the lines of "how will they sleep at daycare?" I'd guess we'll spend anywhere from 2-3 weeks/ year not at our house (which yes, leaves 49-50 at home) so it shouldn't be a deciding factor.
