DH and I have loved the nickname Cece since early in this pregnancy. We are very settled on Catherine as a first name but debating a middle name. The obvious path is to pick another C name, but there aren't really any we love. There are some generic ones like Casey that work. But then I thought maybe we could also use an E name to get the initials C.E. My great grandmother was Elsie and I am really feeling that. But DH fears others will think C.E. to Cece is weird.
So, others...What do you think? Does Cece for C.E. work, or is that a stretch?

Not weird at all! Even if the middle name wasn't an E, I think a lot of people use the first letter to make a nickname (I know a Georgia who goes by Gigi and her middle name isn't a G name, for example). Actually I know a Cameron who goes by Cece too and I have no idea what her middle is.
Do whatever you want! My oldest is Catherine Wilhelmina and she's always gone by Winnie. She's almost 12, I've always told people her name was Winnie and it's generally not questioned
I didn't know nicknames had to be related to the name. I say do whatever you want. I like CeCe. My brother's nickname is completely unrelated to his real name (first, middle, or last) and 30 years later we still call him that.
I know people who had the nickname CeCe - their real names were Cecily, Sicily, Cassidy and Casina. I don't think it matters if her first name is Catherine.
But I agree that I don't think the middle name needs to be a strong consideration when determining a nickname. Just using her first name as the basis for the nickname is fine.
(Aside: my sister is Cecilia with CeCe as the nickname)
My BFF has a daughter named Cecelia that everyone calls Cece. I think Catherine is fine as a first name with Cece as a nickname, and then just have the middle name be whatever you want.
I think it's fine. I called my brother KK growing up, but his first/middle initials are actually KJ. One of my best friends is Laura and her nickname is Lo. Nicknames can be weird.

I don't think it matters what the name is. I lived with a lady for a while who was named Lydia (Long distinguished remaining name), but everyone called her Muffin. She was far from Muffin like, a very smart, tough, successful, fit, lady. It was like the people enjoyed the irony, and she took it as a challenge. How Lydia became muffin, I have no idea. Nickname what you like.
