My dig has horrible separation anxiety when we are gone, and I usually make sure that we always check on her if it is going to be more than 4 hours. Even doing this, she has decided that her new favorite thing is to eat the couch cushions...it has happened on 4 different occasions now, and although we don't have the nicest couch, it is becoming uncomfortable with the stuffing torn out and there is no way I am going to buy a new couch, since the same thing is bound to happen. The crate doesn't work for her, she is a houdini and busts out of it. We are getting a doggie door from amazon that I think will help her when she is feeling trapped, but I'm wondering if anyone has any other ideas or suggestions? I bought that bitters spray and sprayed it all over the couch and she still went to town on it today while we were gone. Help!
A dog door might help your couch, but it won't help your dog feel better. Training your dog and finding a way to make your crate inescapable, will keep your dog (and your things) safer.
I agree with TBM. My SILs dog has bad desperation anxiety, thankfully she doesn't eat things, but recently she did pull a window ac unit out of the window and escaped the house that way. They then gave her a dog door to the back yard, that she is always in, and she now managed to escape the yard by jumping over the (6ft) fence. If the dog is an escape artist from the crate I wouldn't allow the dog in the back yard by themselves.
