From 2010-13 my mom used the post office it was by far the best option. It still gets stopped at customs but less frustrating because then it is delivered by the local postal service. Fedex and UPS were always annoying because they don't transfer to local services so you had to arrange delivery and someone had to sign. This was in France.
But then they jacked up their prices (my mom was using the medium flat rate boxes) so it went from $45 to >$75 i think and just wasnt resonable.
I think depending on the dimensions you maybe save a few dollars at USPS or UPS/FedEx but all those options are $$$$$$. Even the flat rate boxes are ridiculous. However, I've ordered some things directly from Amazon (& Nordstrom) and their intl shipping was surprisingly quite reasonable. much cheaper than it would've been to ship the same thing separately through USPS. I have to deal with customs numbers and stuff but it's worth it.

I have an account with myus.com. It isn't particularly cheap, about $50 minimum for a package, but not too bad if I wait and order a lot of stuff at the same time.
If something I want from Amazon ships internationally it is always cheaper to just have them ship it than anything else. Honestly for most online shopping if they will ship that is usually the cheapest way.
When our families send stuff USPS is the cheapest.
I use a service that has gives me a US mailbox address and then delivers it here. I'm sure there are similar companies in Sri Lanka.
Do you mind sharing that service?
They have this service in Doha also, it's called Aramex. You have to pay a fee to open an account, and then pay so much per kilo (i think). I don't use it but I have a lot of friends who do!
