We've only been in public schools for 2 years, but on top of our tax dollars, we still pay about $600-$800 in donations (money and services) and over 20-hours in volunteer time. Our last school required 30+ hours of volunteer time per family or you were asked to pay per hour - charter, public schools can do that, I guess.
The donations are obviously not required, but when they are selling crap, I usually just donate money instead of buying it b/c then it all goes toward what they need. I'm starting to think I should donate more money to help pay for the extras (art, field trips, extra school supplies, books for library, technology/computer/i-pad fund, etc.).

I have one kiddo in public school. I usually pick to donate money over time if possible. So far this year we've donated about $200, plus we supply about $50 worth of classroom supplies at the beginning of the year (mandatory). We are giving time to help set up for family fun night this week. I work in a school, and I can tell you it's not enough. Tax dollars really go to keeping the schools open, but not supplied.
