I don't know about you, His, but in PR, nicknames come organically, and are not as common as they are in the US. Unsure if it's the same in Mexico.
In PR, a Christina (Cristina) would go by Christina
Never mind that later she'll evolve into something diametrically different like Papu or Tane or Chachi, but Christina or Abigail would be usually what they're referred to always. Â And of course, the nick name that my grandmother had for me is very different than the one my mom has for me, and different than the one that my aunts/uncles call me. Â Seriously. Â VERY different, and somewhat nonsensical in combination.
It's a lovely name, all the same!
Girl you know Mexicans have to give Nick names to everyone. My cousin who is muy moreno, is called Guero. My other skinny cousin is Gordo so of course the fast one is Flaco.

This is so true! I know a Chunky (who is not chunky), a Yoyo, my MIL was Wisin which has nothing to do with what her real name was. Also Toronto, Babi and Papo. These are just the ones I can think of quickly.Â
My sisters and I were La Negra (older sister), La Bonita (me) y La Gordie (my youngest sister.

Around here it's most commonly short for Enrique but I also know a few girls who go by Kiki (one actually goes by Kikis) but I'm not sure what their actual first names are.
Eta I think it's a cute nn for your granddaughter!

I wish I knew 15 years ago that Kiki is a NN for Kirsten. Kirsten is DD's name, and I've never been able to come up with a NN for her, except the ones that don't necessarily follow her into adulthood, like Baby and Little Girl.

I like that nn. I think one grandma privilege is calling the grandbaby whatever you want lol My mom calls my baby (still incubating!) all kinds of cute names that have nothing to do with what the baby's name will be. She's earned it. I definitely have family members that don't know my real name,if I call I have to give them my nickname!
Kathryn. This is what we call K. I think it started because she was trying to say Katie and it came out as Kiki and it just stuck. But it is a common enough nickname.
