Talking to kids about race (links/articles)

We've talked to them about being Jewish as a people as opposed to practiced as a religion.
We've discussed they are first generation and I am an immigrant.
Sadly a lot of this has come out during this presidential campaign. L came home from school saying "you're right the orange guy is a bad man. He says if he's president he'll deport Carlos and a lot of my friends. He was very upset. So we had the whole Carlos will not be deported. I will not be deported and yes he hates your Jewish people. But we will not allow his hate monger ing to scare us at all. And they need to proud to be first generation Vietnamese and half Jewish. And those that have an issue with it. It either shows their ignorance or flat out hate for us because of what we are.
It's a slim line.

Thanks so much for posting this. We had friends staying with us this week who are African American, and my 4 year old said very loudly to their daughter, "You are BLACK. Did you know you are BLACK?" I didn't know exactly how to respond. I mean, it's a neutral statement, so I didn't make a big deal of it, but she shouldn't be shouting that in school, possibly making a kid feel singled out. I really need to get to reading, and sharing with my DDs.

I love this idea because we all have kids in different stages and may not need these books now but may want them later.
