I have gotten so many good book recs from people here outside of the genres I normally read (true crime, crime/murder, historical fiction). Based off @kirkette's recs I just got Negroland and The Sisters are Alright from the library.
On the way there I was listening to The Diane Rehm Show and they had Jesmyn Ward and some others on the show talking about the new book The Fire This Time. It is a collection of essays. I cannot wait to start reading these books. I will fly through them. So thanks for the recs.

I stick mostly to fiction (most of my non fiction is work professional development related stuff on students and higher Ed). I discovered the author Sadequa Johnson earlier this year and really enjoyed her two books Love in A Carry around and Second house from around the corner. Since BN closed down on my side of town I've struggled with finding contemporary Black fiction.
I just finished an advance copy of Terry McMillians new book. I read all her stuff deposited absolutely hating some of theme. I have a spot for her because her early book continue to fuel my love of reading and even though I should have been reading them in the 7th grade. Her last book still felt bitter toward men, but this one I actually somewhat enjoyed most of it.
Also The Turner House was great. Found that by accident at the library.
I added Thr sisters are alright and negroland to my list and picked them up from the library Friday.
I'm admittedly not a huge reader but 2 of my fav books are The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and Long Walk to Freedom. I'm glad I waited until I was living in S. Africa to read Long Walk to Freedom because I felt as though I understood it better and could connect to it more, but highly recommend it to anyone if you haven't read it before.
