I interviewed for a position that I'm thinking I will get an offer for. I've never negotiated for a higher salary before, but I would like to now, but I'm unsure of the logistics. Do I say I'm interested and ask if the salary is negotiable? Do I accept and then ask? Honestly, if offered I'd take the starting salary, but I do think I have room to request additional compensation since I have an advanced degree that is not required for the position.
Yes, I have. I let HR know what I was looking for and why (experience/advanced degree etc) and let them come back at me with a better offer. It worked for me at one job. The other position (the one I started recently) basically had a tiered pay scale---your title is x and you have x years experience. The offer was good, but not quite as high as my previous position (but there were other good benefits)---after I took the position, there was an overhaul of salary scale and I got what I was looking for. It can't hurt to try.
I negotiated with my new job. They offered me x I said with the drive I'm about to take on I would really like y. They came back and said ok. It was through a recruiter so a little different. I think it is important to ask. You'll never know unless you do.
My sister negotiated her salary in her current position. They offered x amount and she said she was highly interested in the position and asked for y amount. They countered with an in-between number but offered to pay x amount toward her school loans every 6 months. That was a surprise that she gladly took and otherwise would not have been offered it had she not negotiated.
I just got through negotiating for a higher salary. They offered $10k less than my requested, so I countered for $5k more, landing me within the range I actually wanted.
I felt very proud, and now I am a true believer of never taking the first offer unless you work in an industry that isn't negotiable or something....
