lol, I'm so glad I have a place to share this. DH and I just got back from a trip to Walt Disney World and boy is that place like some 1950's surfer movie.
Then we went to Animal Kingdom and were like...oh, this is where they've put all the people of color. Hakuna Matata, folks. :-P At least there was one black Jedi at Hollywood Studios! At first I was like, "Well, maybe it's just the talent pool in Orlando" but then I realized that everyone has a nametag with their hometown on it, and they're from all over the country.
I haven't been in many years, but have gone multiple times over the years of growing up and twice since becoming an adult. But yeah, Disney doesn't have a great track record in regards to representation of people of color.
this title. People who love Disney confuse the hell out of me. But I didn't like it even as a kid. My sister loves it. Odd.
I was a self professed Disney hater. I never went as a kid, and I prefer Universal Studios as an adult. We took our kids to Disney in June, and I loved it. Now that I have some distance from the trip, I think I much preferred the planning. I had spreadsheets and everything.

But yeah, it was definitely very white.Â
I do love a good trip planning. I heard about a study that proved that planning a trip gives you the same endorphins as actually taking a trip. For that reason, I also try to stay in trip planning mode. But...I really haven't ever planned a Disney trip. When I've taken DS, my sister does the legwork and comes with us. Now that she has her own DS to take, she is psyched :-|.

We just got back from Orlando. We didn't go to the parks, and just went to Disney Springs, and I had the exact same thought. I'm like this is free, I can't imagine how many fewer POC I would see at the actual park.

Yeah, park attendance was pretty white but the "Cast Members" were like...99% white. We were at the Simpsons part of Universal and a guy next to us in line was like, "Hey, I saw you guys at Magic Kingdom the other day!" and when we got to our table DH was like, "I can't believe in all the thousands of people he remembered us!" and I was like, "Yeah, because he was probably playing 'Find the black guy' like we were!" ;-) Save

That is always a fun game to play on vacation lol.
Disneyworld is where Kirk and I got stared at like zoo animals, because we were an interracial couple. Like, a child on the hotel shuttle spent the ride staring, in our faces, with his jaw about to hit the floor. I couldn't believe his mother didn't even tell him to stop pointing and staring. The kid was about 8 years old too.
We don't see that next level foolishness at Disneyland because all races love overpriced churros and mouse eared dipped ice cream. LOL
I didn't want to like this post because of the first half, but I love the second, which is totally true lol.

LOL! It's true! I buy overpriced churros at all events!
I'm not a fan of the park, because I love roller coasters & I can have a conversation on theirs. Too slow. If I'm gonna throw down $50/head I'm going to Magic Mountain.

My DH is the one who is always seeking out other black men, "just in case something (aka the revolution in his mind) jumps off, you gotta know where your team members are".
Oh, and I love Disney and I just don't understand how they do what they do. We went to the Halloween Party two years ago and it was all of the sudden decorated for the party with pumpkins and Halloween stuff everywhere!

No joke, now that we're back home and the parks are like 7 minutes away, we have no problems rolling up to Downtown Disney for like 15 minutes solely to pick up 4 $4 churros ( those suckers aren't meant to be shared). We did that at least three times, in the first 3 weeks post move. I don't know what in the recipe, but those churros are like crack to OC natives.
Persoj A: I went to Disneyland today Person B: Did you get a churro? Person A: Of course, I'm not crazy. $4 though, that's a bitch!
Churro Ice Cream sandwich...if you haven't tried it yet you NEED to get one on your next trip. It is at the churro cart near the Lego store. 2 warm churro buns with vanilla ice cream smushed between them.

This is the most I've ever wanted to go to Disneyland in my life.

And they have cats at Disneyland. You could get a churro ice cream sandwich and then go hang out with Ned the cat.
