When I first started swimming a few weeks ago, I asked my gym how long the pool was. It doesn't say anywhere in the pool area or on the website how long it was. They said 25M. Ok, fine. Then I started swimming a the rec center and I thought that maybe the rec center pool is longer, but I couldn't tell for sure.
So I googled it. "How long are LA fitness pools?" I found a few message boards where people asked this question and some people said that the gym employees had told them it was 25M, but upon further investigation they figured out that it was actually 25 yards.
Then last night at swim class, I discover that the rec center pool is actually 25 yards across. My times are similar at both places so I think that the gym people don't know how long their own pool is, which is annoying. There is no way the gym pool is longer than the rec center pool if anything, it is shorter. But I can't imagine they would make a pool less than 25 yards. I'm tempted to correct them or even bring in a measuring tape and measure it myself to settle this once and for all. What say you H&F? Would you correct them?
I realize this is all very silly and I'm overthinking it, but I would like to know how far I'm swimming.
mrshandy, I'd take the tape measure and measure it myself! But I am also a little obsessive about data and tracking. :-)
I just took my car in to have diagnostics run on the key fob. They tell me I need it replaced. Ok, fine. Then they said "Oh, when you brought it in last week for the oil change and inspection, they missed that you are leaking power steering fluid. They can't fix the seal without replacing the whole steering frame. That'll be $1600."
:-I
So now I'll be looking for a mechanic here, because no way am I going to pay dealer labor and prices.
I have hit a wall with half marathon training, motivation-wise. This happens to me pretty much every training cycle at some point. Time to just bust it out and make it to race day.
I'm doing a 10k race tomorrow night as part of my training plan, but it's a bit annoying. I have to meet/park in one spot, then walk one mile to the start line, which is also the finish line, so I have to walk 1 mile back to the post-race festivities/my car after the race is over. I realize these are acceptable warm up/cool down distances, but I hate being forced into it, lol.
I desperately need to make some new running playlists, maybe that will help with my motivational slump.
mrs.handy I would totally measure because that would drive me nuts. The pool I swam at when I was in philly for work for a few days was definitely an odd length. I asked somebody as I was leaving and they said they think it's 23 yards. It's in a basement of an old building so I think they just built what fit.
And even in new facilities, architects do stupid things with sports facilities all the time - like just shrink them to fit whatever else works with their buildings. It woudln't surprise me at all.

wambam, maybe try adding vinegar to the water when you hardboil the egg? We do that with quail eggs and it makes a difference.
Non h&F related--Last night, I had a client show up 2 bridesmaids AND with her 2 boys (about 6/7ish). My office/fitting room is really small (It's a converted single car garage bay), and, while I was fitting her wedding dress, DH took the boys in the back to show them how to feed the chickens, collect eggs, showed them the coop/quail, played with the puppy etc. I am so, so thankful that he did that to make the space less crowded.
Along the same lines, one of the skating rinks I skate at has two rinks - the Olympic and NHL rink. At some point I realized they got their names because one is an Olympic sized rink and the other is an NHL sized rink. (The Olympic rink is larger)

Does it affect the taste?
they still taste gross.
TBH, I am not a fan of hard boiled eggs, so I'' not really one to ask. But we only add a tablespoon of vinegar to 1.5 gallons of water, so it'/ not significant
My quads are still sore and the arches of my feet still hurt. Whomp whomp.
I cannot figure out the secret the peelable HB eggs. Every time I make them, they are always impossible to peel.
1. Place eggs and cold water in pot, put lid on. 2. Bring to boil. Immediately turn off heat. walk away and get distracted by 12 different things. Eventually come back. Water and eggs should still be pretty hot. 3. Place in sink, run cold water into pot until eggs are just cool enough to touch. 4. Peel IMMEDIATELY.
I've found that procedure gives me eggs that are actually easy to peel and aren't overcooked. But if you let them really cool down they'll be hard to peel again. No idea why.
I read somewhere that the fresher the egg, the harder it is to peel. So honestly? I never ever boil the ones that come from our dairy. I boil the ones I buy at the grocery store.
Do I want compression socks/sleeves/something for once I start racking up the miles with marathon training?
I've gotten as far as 12 miles without really feeling like I need anything. Not particularly sore, no swelling, etc. Ever so slightly stiff/creaky around the knees, but it works out pretty quickly as long as I stretch/foam roll. Also I hate when things dig into the backs of my knees (I think I have like...chubby knees or something). But I imagine 15+ may be a different story?
And if I want them, I want them to be fun color or pattern so I can look like a crazy person going about my day after a long run with these things on. Suggestions?

When a new athletic complex was built in Birmingham a couple of years ago, they purposefully made their pool something like 23 or 24 yards. Why? Because it fell short of competition regulations, and thus, they could never hold a swim meet there. I wonder if this logic is part of the weird pool sizes as well?

I don't wear mine for running very often but I looooove them for recovery!

what do you feel like they do? Do they just feel good? reduce soreness? What's the point? (I don't mean that skeptically, I'm just not sure what i"m supposed to be looking for in terms of results to know if I want them)

wawa sometimes when my calves are super sore I put compression sleeves on and it just feels like gentle relief. Like somehow being squished makes them chill out a bit.
My quads are still sore and the arches of my feet still hurt. Whomp whomp.
I cannot figure out the secret the peelable HB eggs. Every time I make them, they are always impossible to peel.
I cook mine in an Instant Pot now and I have no issues peeling anymore.
itsme, I had never heard of an Instant Pot before you posted about it a little while ago and now I'm obSESSED. I can't believe I'd never heard of it. We're getting ourselves one for Christmas and I can't wait.
wambam, I'm not sure if this is the reason mine peel fine, but I boil them, then put them into a bowl of ice water for a while (anywhere from 10-15 mins). I peel them one at a time during the week as needed, and they peel very easily. DH also showed me a trick his coworker uses, where she puts the egg into a tupperware container with water, shakes it around and the peel comes off easily but I didn't notice any difference.
labbie my meal preps go super fast now. For the longest I didn't think I wanted one because I have a crockpot so why would I need yet another gadget. HA! I was a fool! I use it all the time.

I wore them a lot during runs when I was having some tendinitis problems in my foot and ankle - and I do think it helped a lot, just because of the compression and support around that area. Things seemed to simmer down when I wore compression socks vs without.

wawa I love my compression sleeves. I basically wear them for anything in the double digits and I'll wear another pair for recovery after runs longer than 15 or so miles. They feel like giant hugs of relief.
I haven't run since Saturday and my legs felt like lead for the first 3 miles of my 6 mile run. I'm so lazy when I'm not in my usual routine.
