The BLM syllabus made me think of this again because it is on the required watching list.
I think it is an important movie and I am sure it is extremely well done. But I don't think I can reconcile the Nate Parker rape and his response. I feel like I am condoning his actions by seeing it. I am very torn because I am all about supporting black films and I would want to support the other actors in the film. Decisions, decisions.

I really wanted to but I don't think I can now without feeling like I'm supporting a rapist. No judgement to those that want to see it though, because I agree with you, it looks well done and it's an important story IMO.
I'm so torn. I really want to see it but in the end I probably won't see it in the theater because I just don't have the time. I'm still trying to see Southside With You...
I am torn. I REALLY wanted to see this movie and was so disappointed in Nate's responses. Does it count if I get the bootleg version from the barbershop (kidding)?!?

I planned on seeing it. I'm disgusted by his response, especially given the area I work with and the Title IX cases I've encountered.
Ultimately I think it is more than him that I'd be supporting. Gabrielle Union gave her response and she has been great in advocating lately. The other actors, scene folks, writers, etc., I want them to have a voice with this film as well. I understand that this might not be a popular response on my part.
I agree that this one is tough, only because there are others involved in this film that I would like to support. Ultimately, I think the answer for me has to be no.
I wanted to, but I can't give him my coins considering recent events. And I hate that, but BRUH, you can't be out here doing this shit and acting like it's no big deal. Sistas go hard for the brothas and then you do this.
So all of THAT and the movie isn't even historically accurate? Including a fabricated rape :-|. Now I'm really confused about why this movie took 642 years to make.

Whaaaa??
Okay, people kept telling me this so I thought I was late to the party. Here is one, I will add more:
That first article is completely gross and has solidified my not seeing this movie. And for them to falsify a gang rape and then make the men look like heroes. Just gross. Would it have been so hard to make a historically accurate film? I guess so.
This is my first time hearing this about the movie.

Agreed.
I was just saying this about the Miles Davis movie, but I don't understand creating a fictitious plot when the real story is actually quite fascinating. #doingthemost
I was still on the fence about going because my friends kept saying it's important to support black movies and actors. But the articles posted have solidified my no. They're going tonight. I just told them to holla at me after if they do something else.
They feel that the story of Nat Turner is more important than anything else. If you start questioning the actions of actors/writers/etc outside of their work then it's a slippery slope. If we don't support this movie our stories will never be told. I even got a WWJD comment about repeatedly using the word rapist. It was in jest but I was already annoyed so my response was a fuck you.
They're really great friends but they will dig their feet in on a position and not budge. It's exhausting at times.
