These were my exact words after reading the first article yesterday. About the only thing I'm willing to give Nate Parker at this point is my big black ass to kiss. And the same goes for the other celebrities trying to shame black women into the importance of seeing this bullshit.
And really, why is it so hard to be historically accurate? The fact that, as a people, we have managed to survive to this point without collectively going batshit crazy is testament enough to the fact that there are plenty of interesting stories to tell without making up shit!
They feel that the story of Nat Turner is more important than anything else. If you start questioning the actions of actors/writers/etc outside of their work then it's a slippery slope. If we don't support this movie our stories will never be told. I even got a WWJD comment about repeatedly using the word rapist. It was in jest but I was already annoyed so my response was a fuck you.
They're really great friends but they will dig their feet in on a position and not budge. It's exhausting at times.
I would be so pissed about this. There's a black woman I'm friends with who tried to argue on FB that since he was acquitted, we shouldn't treat him as if he did it. I stopped talking before I cussed her out.

This argument is just so f*cked up. I mean, I only read one article about it when this thread first started, but even if you go only based HIS side of the story he invited his friend to have sex with a semi-conscious woman, and then lied to her about it afterwards in a recorded conversation. So, he was technically acquitted of rape. Even what he admitted to was reprehensible, and no sane person can rationalize it under the auspices of "being a dog." Save
redwino! One of my friends (who, sadly, is dating a Hotep) tried to convince me that I should see this movie. The conversation actually became so intense--entirely on her end--that I had to remind her that the topic was not personal for either of us and that therefore, it did not need to become contentious nor did she need to yell at me :-|. There was no mention of Jesus, but at one point, she actually uttered the word, "Well, you have a tendency to believe facts are facts, with no grey area." Girl, whet? That's why they're called facts. But I blame myself for this. Friends don't let friends date Hoteps. Now, she's out here defending rapists and wondering why anyone should settle for eye candy when they can have soul food. Why are people so vested in this fool and his movie?!

LOL. It's crazy right? Halfway through the conversation you start wondering how you even got to this point in your life.

I've been laughing for 20 minutes at Why settle for eye candy when you can have soul food. I'm working that into every conversation I have about relationships.

I see this movie isn't doing well at all. Karma is a bitch.
Right.
Then I had someone of FB say 'there you go with that feminism bullshit' when I said I wasn't going to go see the movie. I don't know this dude, but now it is boo, feminism if you think a man shouldn't rape or sexually assault a woman?

Your friend dating a hotep is cracking me UP for some reason. How old is this couple, and is the relationship new? *nosy*
And, I love black people, but I'm rethinking my earlier statement that we haven't collectively gone nuts. The contributions from my FB feed yesterday included a list of everything Nate Parker has ever done as evidence that since this story didn't come out after one of his earlier roles, there is indeed a conspiracy against black men.

Girl. She is 40, he is 41. They have been together for almost two years. She married young and was married for about 18 years when she and her husband split. He had some crap with him, but overall, a good guy and not a moron. So I don't know why she picked up this damn walking meme, but he has her talking straight foolish on a regular basis. I don't want to dog my friend out, because she is truly one of my Day Ones, I mean, friends for over 30 years, but the stuff she was saying yesterday? I don't understand her. I am getting more feminist with age and she seems to be getting less? How, Sway? Our other friend called me last night, pissed, saying they ended up talking about it, too, and she told her that she was "letting [her] own baggage affect [her] perspective on this." The hell? Over a movie? Honey, hush. Sorry, you didn't ask for all this, but I am really confused by her right now lol.
ETA - Omgosh, this is happening in real time! She just sent the two of us a group text with a link about Nate Parker. I have not even clicked it yet. Let me go read this fuckery. Y'all, please pray that I don't have to cuss out someone I've been down with since the days of double dutch, $1.00 inside out pizzas, and stonewashed jeans. Because I love her, but now I feel like she is trying to get this work!Save

This is too much. Feel free to vent here, since she's a Day One. Anybody else and I'd tell them to kick rocks. I'm telling you, the more into my 40s I've gotten, the more I've realized I was wrong to think people automatically got wiser with age. I'm seeing more foolishness now than ever! And I mean, really. Is Nate Parker paying any of your friend's bills? Because, stop it.

Thank you. I just responded to her text. Generally, I don't experience any type of real emotion in these types of conversations, I'm just not wired that way. But I really don't like that comment that she made to our other friend. Like, you're trying to be personal with that. Over a movie. And a stranger. Who is a rapist. That's just way too far. Save

I wonder if we were on the same comment thread. You can't argue with people like that. Guess what Nate Parker could've done not to be in this mess? Not rape that girl, for one. I get the frustrations of Black men getting their past brought out when they're succeeding but this isn't like that and it's shitty to use that argument in this situation. I hate when people put sexual assault victims on trial to defend someone else's actions.
