We've just started talking about maybe doing this. I don't know where to start, so I thought I could get some guidance from those here who have gone.
Who has gone out of Port Canaveral?
Our plan is to fly in the day before the cruise. How does this work? Is it our responsibility to get to a hotel close by and then arrange transportation to the ship? How about on the way back? If so any suggestions on where to stay?

We did a cruise out of Port Canaveral last year. We stayed at the Hyatt right inside the airport in Orlando and used SpacePort Transport to get to the port.
I'm swamped at work, so I can't type a ton here, but I have reviews and info in the may 2015 posts in my family blog.
We did 2 DCL cruises- one out of Miami and one out of port canaveral. For the Port C one, we booked through an agent, who helped us. We got a room on Disney property at port Orleans for the night before... Then paid $70 per person round trip for the Disney cruise bus to take us to the port the morning of the cruise. Then when we got back, the Disney bus took us to the airport. It all went super smooth... But I think for next time I'll look into other options bc I'm sure we could do another hotel and a cab for cheaper... Lol But yeah, you're responsible for getting to the port... It's not included in your cruise price, and it's definitely a good idea to fly in the day/night before :-)
We also stayed at the Hyatt in the airport and then took the Disney transportation to the port. I would suggest taking a taxi or über or pretty much anything else because it took forever. I blogged our entire trip starting with this post: www.wanlifetolive.com/2016/06/a-dream-come-true.html
We just got back from a cruise and left from a Disney hotel. For our transportation we used this company my travel agent likes. www.parkavenuelimousines.com/index.html It was the same price RT as the Disney bus for our family of five and we had a limo with car seats. Highly recommend them!
We did this in the spring. Flew into Orlando and took a shuttle to Port Canaveral and stayed at the Radisson there. It was a great hotel with an amazing pool. They had shuttles to the cruise terminal for I think $5 per person.
