He's a Republican who is on the ballot as an independent in a handful of states. I think he's from Utah and the point to his run is to give Mormons an option to vote for.
Utah, Ohio Polls Are Bad News for Trump in a Bigly Way
Two pieces of bad news for Donald Trump in the polling department: 1. He's tied in Utah with Hillary Clinton and trailed closely by independent candidate Evan McMullin, a Republican (and Mormon BYU grad) who's focused his Trump-protesting independent candidacy on the state. Utah has gone Republican in every presidential election since 1968, but a Salt Lake City polling firm now finds Clinton and Trump tied at 26 percent with McMullin within the margin of error at 22 percent. The Deseret News notes that a majority of voters statewide, and a majority of Mormons in the state, believe Trump should drop out of the race.
2. He's losing to Clinton by 9 points(!) in Ohio in a four-way poll. Trump led Clinton in the state in almost every poll taken in September. In other words, Trump's two-pronged strategy of:
- Being recorded saying appalling things about women
And
- Feuding in petty fashion with every other high-profile member of his own party
Utah will be interesting because they're basically going to split the conservative vote three ways. I wonder if Trump will need to campaign and spend money there?
I checked 538 and utah is still firmly red. Arizona is now a light blue though.
While I'm feeling like Hillary will win the election I expect there will be a resetting back to a closer race as we hit November.
538 has a three candidate model where it looks at Clinton, Trump, and Johnson. If another third party were leading, it wouldn't take that into consideration.

90% of my coworkers are LDS Republicans and most are saying they have no idea who to vote for, I've been dropping McMullin's name a lot and one said she'll vote for him. I think a few are going to write in Romney too. I don't think they'll quite make it to Hillary but I'll take this minor victory!
Early voting started in Ohio today. At the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections, there was a line out the door before opening, a marching band playing across the street for people in line, and it's still filled and crazy at lunch hour now. <3
Those who don't like McCain are likely voting for Hillary.
Those who love McCain likely will not be voting for Trump thanks to his meltdown!
Let me tell you - if McCain fans hear this clip from Steve Schmidt today, Trump is in big trouble. Because, I had chills after listening to Schmidt discuss what hell McCain went through as a POW.
But, I still can't get happy yet. I'm still worried about this election. I can breathe a little easier, but the turnout needs to be way up. Hopefully, the hate of Trump by black folks will get us out to the polls. I haven't had very many people in my circles say they wouldn't be voting.

This is why I'm so grateful for early voting. This has been the big push of the HRC campaign in places like Ohio. They've been organizing like crazy to get people to the polls from now until Nov. 8. The assault video hit on Friday, and early voting started today. So people that are motivated can vote RIGHT NOW.
If Hillary wins Utah, that would be a truly beautiful thing.
I have a friend who is going to vote 3rd party in Utah and I consider that a HUGE win.
She and her friends NEVER would have voted a democrat but since Trump is such a deplorable....
This is now my approach with my parents. They're in the Never Hillary camp, and I've come to accept that nothing I say or do will change that. So now I'm encouraging them to vote 3rd party. McMullin seems like someone they could comfortably vote for. They're in a solidly blue state anyway, but I still can't stomach my parents voting for crazy Trump simply because he's Not Her.
