I have no idea what to use for serving food in the living room when I have guests over! I usually lay everything out on the kitchen island which is next to the living room but no one seems to want to walk over for seconds. I loved the round blue ottoman posted in the other thread but I cannot seem to find it local or available to ship to Canada.
Any other ideas for a coffee table? Or any other ideas overall :-)

I definitely think you need an ottoman or coffee table in there. Is it an actual family room (like, where your family hangs out), or is it mostly just there? For me, that would determine which you might want.
I like those coffee tables that lift up to make a table. It's like the ultimate in lazy-person furniture. Like this:
If you just google "lift top coffee table" you'll get hundreds of styles.

Thanks! I tried a coffee table in there once but found it totally crowded the room. I gave up but am stressing over hosting book club and where to put the food. Lol.
The room has no tv - its next to the kitchen so if we entertain that's where we do it. It get used a lot by my family for just hanging out. We have a playroom upstairs for the kids and a big screen tv in the basement.

My living room is exactly like this, with a window on one side, a wall on the other, and fireplace in the middle. I'm wondering if you've tried it with the two chairs on either side of the fireplace, and the sofa facing the fireplace? Would the sofa fit that way, or is it too wide to get around? I'd also like to see it with a round coffee table in the middle, and a darker, patterned rug.
Sometimes a truck as a coffee table is fun too. I would also turn everything like mentioned above so that the recliners are on either side of the fire place.

Thanks, we tried that and the couch is just too wide, and the chairs too big. The room just looked cramped that way. Plus I think I'd miss being able to have conversations with guests in the living room while I'm in the kitchen. I love the cream shag rug :-) I think given the dark furniture and the dark wood floors it really lightens up the room.
I am looking for a round coffee table. Just not seeing anything I like other than the blue ottoman that's not available.

I agree that the furniture is rather bulky for the space. I like the rug too; maybe then lighter-colored, smaller scaled furniture would be better? Just a bigger investment than a rug. Happy decorating!

Thanks! New furniture is on our list and I agree completely. However but it's pretty far down that list because while this furniture is old and not what I would choose today, it's high quality and still in great condition. We are just too frugal to replace it.
