The fire pits put out very little actual heat IMO unless you are standing leaning over it. I like the open flame & I let my kids roast marshmallows on it...but it's not super functional to keep you warm IMO. The pole kind throws down some decent heat, if you are sitting under it...lol. We have both these types. The pyramid ones I've only experienced at restaurants/bars and I feel like I remember those working pretty well.

A lot of restaurants around here have the hat kind to keep the patios warm in winter. They're functional, if ugly.
I've only ever seen the cone kind from a distance, but they look like they use a lot more propane, based on lots more flame, if that's something which concerns you.
I'm growing older but not up. My metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck, let the winds of time blow over my head. I'd rather die while I'm living than live while I'm dead.
We had a bunch of the pole/hat ones at the restaurant and they worked great.
are they energy hogs? Dh and I thought of getting one for our porch. I'm hesitating bc we'd have to store it in warmer months, they're sort of ugly', could be dangerous w young kids and I've read they use lots of gas. Oh and I thjnk you need to be careful near screens BC they can melt.

We used the large propane tanks, and my memory is that they lasted about two nights of business. That was from about 6pm to 1 am.
