I have an 18 y/o cousin who I took to the polls for her first voting experience.
After Tuesday, she was devastated.
I spoke to her about standing strong in the face of opposition (some other family members are #45ers) and how there was a time in history when Blacks and women were not allowed to vote.
She said she couldn't understand why they just let it happen and I explained to her that they didn't just let it happen. Women and blacks were seen as less than white males, therefore their voices were ignored.
She is now looking for reading materials about segregation because she never really learned anything about in school and she started college this fall.
OH! She has another way to get a crash course in African American history by watching The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross and Black America Since MLK which is currently airing on PBS. Last night's episode was exceptional. She can watch those since she just started college and her reading list is probably slammed. I could never read for fun in college. I always waited until the break to read fun stuff.
