Does anyone needlepoint? I'm thinking about trying it out, but there isn't anywhere around me that teaches a class on it. How difficult is it? Is it something I could reasonably learn from a book?
Also, how advanced of a project is a stocking? I don't mean can I knock it out in a day, but is it a project a beginner could learn on?
Also, how different is needlepoint from cross stitch? Is one maybe a better beginner craft than the other?
I do some crossstitch. I've dabbled in needlepoint and embroidery. I prefer the repetition of crossstich. I think you could learn both from books and videos and once you know the stitches and tricks it would be pretty straight forward. Crossstich is primarily the single stitch (/ or X), though more complicated patterns have French knots, which I still struggle with. Needlepoint has more stitches to learn but I think most are pretty straight forward.

I was looking at needlepoint because it seemed like most things had printed canvases that you are almost "tracing" over instead of freehand. Is there something like that with cross stitch?
